Xweb 2.0 is pretty dormant

If we don't teach it to walk it may never run. IMHO.

To paraphrase Sir Isaac Newton...

My opinion is that people will stay here until forced to leave... The switch will require a formal cut-in and cut-off...

Agreed...

... I am just very cautious that Xweb 2.0 is going to be ready and able to support the full weight of our daily usage before I go and force the move. Right now I know it has looked on the surface to be "ready" to use for a long time but the reality from the admin side is that its not quite there yet. It still has some problems on the admin side that concern me enough to not want to initiate the full blown move over there yet, and unfortunately I only can work on modifying/improving it in little bits here or there as my personal free time permits. It is slowly getting closer and closer though, it is coming, just a matter of time...

Right now the main problem that has come to the fore most recently is spam bot attacks, which is something on N54 that's basically nonexistent. Because vbulletin is a much more "mainstream" system to be running, there are a lot more spammers out there using automated programs to seek out and attack such boards. The stock setup over there is totally totally inadequate to fight them off so some rather significant aftermarket mods/hacks will have to be done. I guess you can just say I'm not going to ask/make everyone move over there just in time to get spammed with porn or penis enlargement or viagra etc... and it's just taking so long because every problem I conquer there are others still as well.

So we use 1.0 while 2.0 continues to evolve/develop/refine. I realize it will never be "perfect" and want to make clear I'm not planning to hold everyone off from moving til it's so highly developed that we might as well never get there, but at the same time, it DOES have to be highly developed "enough" that I will feel confident asking/making everyone move over without fearing we'd all get there just in time to have the whole system go kaput on us over something I forgot to deal with in advance etc. Stay tuned, and in the meantime, do feel free to go over and post there anytime...

Peace, -Mac

Mac is it posible to move just one forum (like for sale etc) that has less traffic first to stress test?

Can you move in stages?

Well, we in fact just did that...

.. Those of you who don't often venture over to "Not BS" may have missed it but a couple weeks ago I actually completely shut down Not BS and redirected all off topic traffic to the Xweb 2.0 Not BS section... for several days, not quite a week but I think 5 days? The main point was less to stress it but more to help me identify errors bugs glitches registration problems account issues etc that "real users" who were signing up in order to get posting rights might encounter, on more than just the "onesie twosie" basis up to then etc.

Sadly, only a tiny handful of people who "normally" use Not BS over here really got active anyway, mostly what happened instead is just half of the Not BS users just went lurking, read both places but essentially just stopped posting off topic altogether, and the other half just started posting more off topic in the 1.0 DF right here...

So it didn't quite work as well as I had intended, so I kind of cut the lockdown shorter than I had initially planned to leave it in place, and just reverted traffic back to N54 NBS and called it good. What it showed me is that it's just not going to get any significant traffic til we literally force everyone to go there... and I'm just not to the point with 2.0 yet that I'd feel comfortable/confident completely shutting down N54 Xweb and redirecting 100% of the traffic over there...

Stay tuned though, I am active behind the scenes over there as time permits, even when there is no visible change apparent on the surface from the user end I am usually up to hacking/tweaking something on the admin side...

Peace, -Mac
