From Sep 18th until Dec 17th I will be exhibiting black and white photographs of the Las Arenas plaza de toros that lies in the center of Barcelona.
The photographs feature the architecture and ambience of this magnificient building built in the neo-arabist syle and opened to the public in 1900. Some of the famous toreros who fought there include Luis Mazantini, Antonio de Dios, Antonio Montes, Domingo del Campo (Dominguin), Joselito, Belmonte and Chicuelo. The last corrida took place on June 9th 1977.
Although Las Arenas has lain dormant for many years when I went inside the building to photograph it the atmosphere was tangible and the sense of history very real. As of this month demoliiton work has commenced at Las Arenas as it will be converted into a shopping center.
The exhibition can be seen at Calle San Gil 17 in the El Raval barrio in the center of Barcelona or call 93 442 5469 for details. |
