On a Night Like This:
The night air was heavy with the emotion of the day, and all the toil. Eeyoraus wrapped herself tightly in the shawl to ward off the cold, but it was of little use. Her body was tired, her spirit was drained and she felt as if she hadn't a friend in the world. And out here, at the edge of the Roman Empire, that wasn?t far from the truth.
Evening had just fallen on what has been called the worst night in history. She pressed her cold hands against her tear stained face to ease the puffiness around her eyes. She began to walk up the hill, opposite the throng of haunting figures that seemed to merge in and out of reality. The crowd, it seem too large, perhaps millions had gathered here, and yet there was room for all. She was one of the present - and yet unseen - who had flocked to this forsaken hill in the middle of nowhere.
As she approached the top of the hill she nearly bumped into a man who was just standing there mumbling to himself. She stood quietly behind him to hear him whispering. He said with a trembling voice, "They gave me vinegar to drink. They gambled for my cloak."
E! stepped forward and stood next to her friend. They were both silent for a while, "I didn't expect to see you here." She said looking forward.
Quietfire turned and looked her square in the face, "I've been coming here, every Spring, since I was a kid." He held his finger over his lips to say "shhhh".
E! nodded. She stepped up to him and leaned against his chest and he put his arm around her; it was good to feel the warmth of his body. They just stood there silent as the cold and the darkness occupied the land. E! began to relax, and as she did emotion filled her heart once again. "Oh Quietfire." She buried her face under his cloak.
They were nearly alone on top of the hill, just a few soldiers packing things up and drinking themselves into a stupor. QF pointed to a garden below them. In the distance they could see a line of people with torches carrying their precious burden to be placed behind the stone. E! hugged the Hunter tightly. He hugged her back, she could feel he was shaking, and not from the cold.
"...forgive them, they don't know what they are doing.? Oh God!!!" QF's voice cracked as he held her close. "... and I could HEAR him trying not to scream." He put both arms around his friend. "...forgive them.?" He sobbed silently. Then he continued, "What kind of wondrous love IS this??"
They held each other in silence for a long time. And it was ok to say nothing, just being there; two friends.
After a long while Quietfire straightened up and looked into his friend's eyes and said, "Even after you've given up hope, and all your dreams have died and it looks like you are living in hell. The resurrection WILL follow, it cannot be stopped."
"God loves you, Quietfire." She spoke firmly, full of conviction.
"Yes." He responded with a gentle smile. "And..." He continued as he placed his hand on her heart "He lives in here."
She stared into his wild, hazel eyes that were so docile now. The world began to spin around her as the cold, and the exhaustion and the sorrow pulled and tugged at her. She lost herself in this strange mix of love, trust and endless hope. Everything stripped her of knowledge and all sense became everything and nothing. And the darkness, the beautiful darkness, that could never overcome, swirled around her until there was nothing.
..................................
E! opened up her eyes to the sun breaking through the early morning clouds. She quickly looked around. She was still wearing the cloths from the night before, and her eyes were still damp from her tears. A piece of paper slipped from her bed and landed on the floor. She picked it up and read.
"God loves you too." "Because God loved the world so much, He sent his only begotten son, that everyone who believes in him would not die.... but live, eternally."
