The complex shape of the Royal oak case, especially where the sharp edges where matte and polished metal meet, all contribute to the 'feeling' of quality for the Royal Oak. Panerai cases are not poorly finished, but the RO is a different ball game in terms of complexity and skill required to finish the case. In most other aspects, like movement and dial, AP is equal to most of the other top houses, though some argue Patek, Lange surpass it in aesthetic and traditional finish.
As a side note, I have owned several Royal Oaks, including three Offshores, and to me the weak point is the application of luminous material on the dial of the arabic dial Offshore. Under high magnification, 15-20x, it is not neat or cleanly done.
