Recently, in the process of selling an F-Series Themes (which has been sold, so I am not violating the rules), I encountered some superstitions among potential buyers who had been misled or confused by some of the postings on other discussion forums. They seemed to have the notion that the G-series was somehow superior to the F-series or that it had many changes or that it had the new movement, when the only kernel of truth appears to me very minor. Thus, this post is to dispel some of the rumors that have arisen.
First: So far, both F- and G-series Themes models have the same movement, identified in the Certificate of Origin as 2326/2840.
Second: The only difference I can discern between the specimens I compared is the placement of the cyclops for the date window. The photo that follows highlights that difference in the reflection captured around the date window of the F-series (on the left), which is absent from the G-series (on the right). In most lighting conditions, I can't discern the difference.
In my view, the only rational basis for preferring a G-series over an F-series is that, on the average, the F-series will have been produced earlier and therefore, on the average, the F-series will need to be serviced sooner.
I agree that they are identical twins, one of whom was born before the other. I didn't know about the Panerai issue; perhaps that's another source of the confusion I've encountered.
Yes, I think you're correct about the AR over the date window. That would explain the observable difference.
I agree that in this photo it appears that there is a difference in the polished edges of the case, but I wonder if that was a design change and, if so, when it was initiated. Do you have any additional information about this?
Although this is my very first post in this forum, I have read through many many pages in this forum. Your postings and comments are always very informative, especially to an AP newbie like myself.
I am looking forward to my first AP ROO and I honestly do not mind receiving the G-series instead of the F-series. :-P
As I bet you've already noticed, there are many helpful and gracious people here. Most of what I've learned, I learned here, and many of us have made lasting friendships here. Please be sure to post photos of your AP when you're able to do so, as everyone seems to enjoy the photos.
It can be intimidating to post, as some of the regulars are so knowledgeable and such great photographers, but it turns out they are quite forgiving of well-intended errors, good-spirited naivety, or amateur picture-taking like mine.
Welcome, CH. Looking forward to sharing your experiences

and points of view on our shared interest in AP and AP models. Getting a G-series is nice, but I strongly encourage you not to rule out an F series if one should be available at a favorable price. I'm assuming you are looking at pre-owned, of course, though there are plenty of F series new still in dealer channels.
All the best,
TM

Thanks, Park, great side by side. I too have heard that...

the newer case bands have a wider mirror polished "shoulder" than older cases, but I haven't confirmed this with HQ, and frankly, I've "heard" so many different "stories" in the past, even from within the company itself, that unless I am hearing "official" statements from departments in charge, or from the executive offices themselves, I just take them as rumour or hearsay.
Also, I really have to wonder - how the heck does wider polished shoulders make the case "superior?"
The MIS-information about F and G being reliable indicators of 2326 vs 3126 movements inside, is simply WRONG.
But then, that's the nature of the internet...
Thanks, Park.
