That is one magnificent photo of a beautiful timepiece! Bernard, if that doesn't convince

July 29 2004, 3:11 PM

you then nothing will! In answer to your earlier post I strongly suggest this particular GP Three Bridge Tourbillon in the Vintage case. Classic and stunning! The RM is novel and unique but I don't forsee it standing the test of time like the GP will. It may also have parts and service problems down the road should the company cease to exist (not that I am portending this.) I put my money where my mouth is; the watch Peter pictured is the same model that I purchased and I am extremely satisfied that I did.

Regards,

Ed Tonkin

Uncanny ...we seem to have quite a few similar watches

July 29 2004, 5:10 PM

I totally agree with your take on the RM, you have exactly the same fears...and understanding your experience with the car industry, I take your views much more seriously....I just feel that RM has brought over much of the glamour of the auto industry to the watch world, unfortunately it also brings over a weakness we call "shelf life".

I want my timepieces to remain timeless! Sounds almost like an oxymoron.

Well, itīs just a picture..

July 29 2004, 9:28 PM

... so just wait until you see the real thing
Thatīs a piece to be seen in nature, like a Foudroyante or a repeating timepiece. A picture, video or sound file is great, but thereīs simply no way to represent the impact they have in nature.

But then - encountering one of these (any of the GP tourbillons) is to fall for it in the same minute. Thereīs no backing out and it WILL leave you with a deep desire, so watch out

Cheers,

Peter

I am convinced!

July 29 2004, 5:05 PM

Yes...this is the exact same piece in the same metal and colors that I pictured in my mind almost a year ago in Singapore ( see old post by JAW)....now I just need to see the round case one more time to make up my mind.

Thanks a heap Peter!

See you at the IGOTT!

Itīs a "demi-sceleton"....

July 29 2004, 9:14 PM

Hi Bernard,

the WG or Pt pieces, particularly with WG bridges, are ethereal. Not as traditional as a PG variant, but so beautiful it is truly impossible to withstand. These beauties do steal hearts

Now the pictured one comes with an interesting detail:
If you look closely, you can see the sapphire back.
Other than previous versions, the new case does come with a round "hole" with a crystal in the back, in order to see the tourbillon boss and 4th wheel. The pictured piece actually is a prototype/pre-series piece, but they can be had this way and itīs a very nice feature

which adds a lot.

Just a correction and apology:
I didnīt fondle the picture in PS other than correcting the size; as you all know, colour correction is my weak spot being colourblind like a mole. Therefore, donīt beat me up if it does not match the natural colours very well. In that regard, "point&shoot" is all i can do.

Well, no surprise you will see exactly that one in a few weeks during Tempus.
Have a close look at the PG variant (click here for a BIG picture), as itīs more classic and a beauty as well.

Both round cases ("President" and "Classic") are very attractive. I love the Vintage45 case, but particularly the classic round case goes very nicely with the historic movement layout: It is in fact like a pocket watch case, with a likewise high bezel ring and a case that gets wider towards the back.
While it does have a certain visual "weakness" when pictured (that is, the bezel is quite high), itīs perfect on the wrist. Thatīs what the case is designed for, so donīt miss the chance to have a look at it when worn.

Iīm glad you like it. Given the wide variety of some very very nice watches around, iīm confident you canīt do wrong with a GP tourbillon. It simply IS a very special watch and Magali likes them too...

Magali... here and here

Peter

Hey Hey Hey, don't forget the flipping DR >>

July 29 2004, 9:22 PM

Bernard,

All the talk about RM and GP but conveniently forgot to discuss the DR?

If I had one, the current Mrs MTF would rip my arm off for a GP 3-bridge two-be-yongh. We looked at one in Singapore, we looked at more than a few in the GP manufacture in LCdF, we looked again in Tokyo...all round cased.

Please, please, please, don't show us this GP rectangualr rose gold version at IGOTT or else this years's bonus is history

Regards,

MTF

The DR is a great watch as well! There will be something special in Singapore...

July 29 2004, 9:42 PM

Hi Melvyn,

there are certainly many nice pieces and so is the DR. I like the development and history of the DR and it makes for an attractive and very high-end watch; just that still thereīs nothing like a GP Three Bridges Tourbillon. As you have seen them, you do know

Hmm, the RG Vintage45 case will not be the heartbreaker of IGOTT...
Ok, not unless Mrs. MTF spots it

It may became a bit buried, but there will be some special pieces in Singapore, for the first time to be shown outside Switzerland: the 1867 original Three Bridges Tourbillon pocket watch by Constant Girard-Perregaux, which is the one that started it all. This very piece does have a very special story. Actually a lot of them, including how it passed all COSC tests back in the 1990s (at the age of 104).
You will be able to see how the wrist pieces do match this heritage, live and first-hand. Itīs an impressive experience, so donīt miss it...

Just donīt forget to bring dear Helen

Cheers,

Peter
