The story begins when Demetrio Azunsolo goes to Mexico to visit his half-brother Ricardo Platas and discovers that he has committed suicide because of a very cruel and evil woman. The pain Demetrio feels over his brother's death quickly turns to anger - he becomes enraged and vows revenge. He decides that he is going to find this woman and make her pay, but he doesn't know her name only that it begins with the letter "V", or what she looks like only that she is beautiful. He manages to find a few more clues about her which leads him to the Fernandez-Negrete household where two young women named Virginia and Veronica live. He is immediately taken with Veronica's beauty, and he starts to suspect that she may be responsible for his brother's death. His theory is helped along by the manipulations and deceptions of Virginia who is jealous of Veronica and is fighting for the love of their cousin Juan. So Demetrio moves forward with his plan for revenge against Veronica not realizing that it is all "a lie".
