Accoriding to the encyclopedia, porridge was first introduced by the Greeks and was origionaly boiled oats, crushed oats, or oatmeal but, could be any cereal or grain that has been ground and boiled in either milk, water, or broth. So, I guess grits is porridge and so is oatmeal.

As for food of the Gods, we all know that's manna and can be eaten or smoked depending on if you are hungry or
