About two years ago, I got arrested for misdemeaner possesion of marijuana and misd. poss. of drug paraphanalia (a dugout).
First there was 375.00 To the bonding company to get out of jail after a 14 hour hold.
Second, 1500.00 fine for the pot, and 1000.00 for the pipe.
Now, you can make payments on this but, to do so, you remain on probation and pay your fines through a probation office (private firm). If you pay 100.00, then 35.00 goes to the company and the remainder goes to your fine.
You are also sent for an evaluation by a clinical psychologist that decides if you need a level one or a level two substance abuse class. The evaluation is done at an office called court referal.
The evaluation and initial urinalysis is 175.00. Then, each month for six months you go to this office and give them twenty dollars to write down observations about your general attitude. You are told to bring 40.00 in case they decide to slip another urinalysis in on you.
Toward the end of the six months you begin your substance abuse class. Cost of class, 365.00. It lasts six weeks and is four hours a week. It is mostly a bunch of potheads standing around smoking cigaretts and talking about...what else? Pot.
After court refferal is over, you have taken your last urinalysis, and paid and additional 50.00 for your certificate of completion, you continue to make monthly payments of your fine.
This is a true story and it gives you some idea of how the system spreads the money around. Remember, this is only a misdemeaner charge. Imagine a felony. Oh, and by the way, the privately owned court refferal office and the privatly owned probation company are both run by two women who's husbands are city police officers.
This is Alabama, I don't know how it is elswhere. I would say that somebodies or three made a little cash because of my little bud and one hitter.
