Before I was a JW I had a lovely one at my door. She was a make-up queen sister wearing lots of bright, red lipstick. I asked her about their stand on Christmas and she went into the pagan origins explanation. I countered with reasoning that just because something began with one intention doesn't mean it is the same reason someone celebrates it today....."for instance," I said to her, "do you know the origins of lipstick?" Apparently the WT hadn't ran the same article I'd read in Hustler so I enlightened her on the subject. Lipstick was worn by Egyptian prostitutes to advertise their particular expertise in oral sex! She got flustered and said, "um...well that's not why I'm wearing it!" My point exactly.
As my husband reasoned with me when I began taking stands on everything in my JW blindness, he said, "(Win) everything has pagan origins! They were here first!!!" That makes sense, they were.
I'd gotten into this oral sex debate with sisters and elders alike over the years in the Tower. To have a few old farts in New York decide the expression of love for a married couple is ridiculous! And when I announced that to the P.O. in my congregation he said, "oh, we don't want to get involved in those personal matters." And I agreed, but then I asked why the organization had the audacity to publish their anal retentive (perhaps I should say oral retentive) attitudes presented as truth to us as if our personal choice to ignore their opinion was the basis for judgement. It was his daughter too that was the lipstick lady at my door years earlier.
