What has changed more than anything is our concept of living standards. As you pointed out, in 1963 we had 1 TV (and we considered ourselves lucky because the house was on a hill and we got THREE channels. A lot of my friends only got 1. Most days if we wanted entertainment my mom shoved us out the door and told us to go do something. (or put us to work)

The whole flow of life was slower, and involved a lot less stuff. I actually think that, at least where I lived and within my family, people were closer to the earth by quite a bit more than they are now. A lot of people had a garden and did their own canning.
