Some of them moved west

by

Hi!

I'm looking for Galbraith information because I suspect that they are the missing link in a marriage loop involving Waddells, Wilsons, and possibly Peckovers.

That loop stretches from Egremont Twp in Ontario to the Morris and Dufferin Municipalities in Manitoba.

I have the Dufferin Centennial Book in front of me. It doesn't say too much about the Egremont Galbraiths, but there were two sets of Galbraiths in Manitoba.

I think the one you are most interested is the branch that included Duncan Galbraith--see the end for some info I've saved on him. The other branch began with a John Galbraith 1 (1787-1855) & wife Mary who emigrated from Belfast in 1813. Children included John 2 (1817 who married Mary Anne)-(no mention of others, but I suspect one other founded Duncan's line) John 2 had William Charles & John 3, who lived in Camden, Ont.
Wm. C. married Jane Ager in 1860. 6 children before moving west. Margaret Jane, James(m. Honor Grimstead, 10 children, John 4, William Charles Jr (m. Sarah McEwan), Hamilton, Sanford. Seven more born out west, but only three lived. There's more in the book if they're yours.

Here's Duncan--in part.

William H. Waddell married Elizabeth Galbraith, sister-in-law to William Wilson. Three children: William Ernest (W. E.), Annie May, and "Ormie".

D. Galbraith - Duncan Galbraith (1861-1935). Neil Galbraith had married Janet Orr in Ontario. Children included Duncan, Annie (married to Wm. Wilson Sr.), and others.
Duncan came to Manitoba in 1897 with his nephews John & Jim Wilson and homesteaded SW ¼ 33-6-2. From 1906 to 1910, Duncan farmed SW ¼ 31-6-2 w.

"Duncan [Galbraith] lost his life at Brandon, Aug. 5, 1935. Excerpts from Brandon Herald: 'Injured in a cyclone that swept through the North Brandon district August 10, 1935. 'Monarch No. 10386, Canada's most Outstanding Percheron Stallion with more than 40 Grand Champions to his credit - died today.' Mr. Carl Roberts of Morris was the owner. Duncan Galbraith had been groomsman for the [previous] 5 years." (FIV, p. 813.)

Please contact me if you need info I have or can help with my jigsaw puzzle.

Looking for information on my great grandfather

by

My great grandfather owned and operated a tavern at Owen Sound in the late 1800's and/or early 1900's. Some information I have is that it was a rowdy place, and that some of my grandfather's siblings died on the premisis. I understand he and his wife and several of their children were buried in a large cemetary near Owen Sound.

My Grandfather, William Cullen Matthews, decided that "this was no way to live" and became a Minister (Methodist) I believe. He attended a Seminary just over the border in upstate New York. His first posting was to a Church in Hamilton Ontario. He later moved to Selma Alabama, where he ran a Railroad "YMCA". He died and was buried in Selma.

Please share any information you may have on my greatgrandfather. I have no idea where he came from or the exact timeframe, or location of his ownership of the tavern at Owen Sound.

Thanks, Bill Matthews

McLeods of Simcoe County

by

Dear Dan,

I am the great grandson of Alexander McLeod (born 1849, died 1931), who was Donald's brother. The family settled in Canada from the Isle of Islay, Scotland on or about 1862 at Duntroon, where quite a few Highland Scotch ended up in their first years in what was then Nottawasaga township(it is now Clearview).

The family (including my great-grandfather) settled on the 8th Line near Glen Huron, Ontario in 1867. There is long tradition of McLeods in that part of the township, many of the descendents (my cousins) still live there.

By the end of 19th century, the lot had been divided into 3 homesteads, with Donald's parents (my great-great grandparents) taking the western part of the lot, and his brothers John and Alex (my great-grandfather)further subdividing the eastern half into two more farms still, at least one of these still in the family today. It's a gorgeous place, my grandfather always laughed that these folks chose the foothills of the Niagara Escarpment over the flat lands of Duntroon. "They missed the hills of home", he would say.

I would love to hear from you. Please e-mail me and I hope that I can provide you with more information.

Best Regards,
Shane Turner (my mom was the McLeod!)

Thomas Henry (Harry) Lougheed

by

Thomas Henry Lougheed was born in 1861, his parents were Thomas Henry Lougheed and Elizabeth Lewis. The younger Thomas Henry Lougheed was married to Margaret Jane Marshall. They had six children Thomas Henry (Harry), Marshall, and four girls, whose first names I have not yet found. Harry married Anna Viola McInness from the Shallow Lake area. What I am looking for is the following. The Thomas henry Lougheed who parents where Thomas and Elizabeth was born in Normanby Township. His father died at an early age (35?) at which time Elizabeth married a Joseph Orr. In the 1871 census of Normanby Township, there is a listing for Joseph Orr (born 1814), Elizabeth Orr (born 1835) and at the same property there is this Thomas Lougheed (born 1861). When I checked the 1881 census for Normanby Township, I find that these same Orr's are listed and have a child of their own, but there is no listing that I can find for the Thomas Lougheed. I am looking for information that might lead to me finding where this person went to after 1871. If you can help me in any way or require further information please contact me. This Jospeh Orr (born 1814) is my great, great, grandfather. Thanks

Corry & Caswells from Somerset , England

by

Hi Roger,

interesting to see the Carey and Caswell names together...

My ggggrandfather was Emmanuel Corry... (also seen as Cary) of Babcary,Someset..his son Henry Corry born 1826 was a builder and business man in London who was active in politics..he married in Oxford in 1852 , Julianna Caswell d/o William Caswell and Eliz Knight of Charlton Mackrell. Don't know anything of Julianna's line except what I have wrote..
Henry and Julianna named their children: Ellen Eliza,
Henry and Alice Julia Louise born Kensington between 1855 & 1860.
So, perhaps your Caswells hail from this line.

In search of house history

by

Hi out there!
In May of 2001, my husband Paul and I purchased what most of you might remember as the old Fleming Estate, at the top of the 9th St. hill. Since 1995, it has been known as The Highland Manor Bed and Breakfast. We are very interested in talking to anyone who may have any knowledge of the history of the house, from its construction by the Ross family in the 1870's, up to and including the Fleming family. There is an "urban legend" in Owen Sound that this was once a home for unwed mothers. Although we have documented proof that it WAS a private maternity hospital run by a midwife by the name of Margaret Moore, we would like to clarify just what the hospital was used for. If you can help with this or any other history of the house we would love to hear from you. Many thanks!! -- Linda Bradford

House History

by

Hello
I recently searched the history on my house which is in Owen Sound and found the City Directories located in the library were quite helpful. They do not have every year but there were quite a few years from 1900 to present day. They are indexed by name and by house address.
hope this helps

Cartwrights

by

I am researching my Cartwrights who were in the Owen Sound and Meaford area in the 1800s: William Cartwright born 1841 (family from Wales and Ireland), married Sarah Abercrombie 1865 near Owen Sound (could your Sarah be a grandaughter?) I am descended from their son, Robert Howell Cartwright (born 1866 in Meaford and moved to USA in 1888).

Sarah Cartwright

by

Yes, these families may be related. My Sarah's daughter was married in 1900, so Sarah would have been born in the second half of the century, but before 1870 for sure. So, I don't think she could be your William's grandaughter.
Do you know all the names of his children, and that there is no Sarah? Maybe William was her brother?
My grandmother wrote down that our Sarah had a connection to the spinning jenny. Whether she was mistaken and it was the Cartwright who invented the power loom, or that was her job I don't know. But, I am trying to find out.
Please let me know what records you have found for your Cartwrights, and I'll share anything I can, too!
Thanks!

Usher / Grierson Sydenham c.1850

by

Hello all,

I have recently discovered a connection to Sydenham:
Robert Grierson m. Janet Usher 11 March 1852.

I knew from old documents that Janet and her 3 sisters all went to Canada but this is the first real lead I've had.

I have looked around and managed to find some material online relating to Sydenham, including W. W. Smith's Gazetter and Directory of the County Of Grey for 1865-6, where a Robert Grierson is listed as a magistrate.

I also found Janet & Helen Usher enumerated in the 1851 census in Grey County.

Does anyone else have any tidbits of info that might relate to these people at all?

best wishes,

Mark Usher

Sullivans in Bentinck

by

I'm not sure I can help but this lady may. She is a Canadian researcher. I live in the States and she has helped me a great deal. (I have reimbursed her postage, etc.).

jophiel@sympatico.ca

She gave me this Sullivan data --

James Sullivan (1840-1907), son of Perry Sullivan/Catherine Karney married Eliza Hopps (1845-1876). He was born in Verulam, South Cayuga. Eliza was born in Bentinck, Grey County.

James Sullivan (1839-??), son of Peter Sullivan/Catherine LNU, maried Margaret Ellen Hopps (1839-????) on 27 Dec 1864. He was born in Durham, Ontario. Margaret was born in Bentinck, Grey County.

As you can see, I think something got mixed up here. If, by chance, you have the correct data, I would be delighted to compare/exchange info if you are willing.

Thanks.

Groing has to be Ontario's smallest community. It's got four houses, one on each corner of an intersection of Grey Rd. 12 and some other road. If it weren't for the four blue signs that say "Goring" on them that are each located no more than 100 meters from the intersection, you would not even know you've been there.
