Galbraith search
by
please any info on Galbraith relatives appreciated..all I know is granmother died of TB ,grandfather workedwith horses and possibly trained for racing.
I'm looking for Galbraith information because I suspect that they are the missing link in a marriage loop involving Waddells, Wilsons, and possibly Peckovers.
That loop stretches from Egremont Twp in Ontario to the Morris and Dufferin Municipalities in Manitoba.
I have the Dufferin Centennial Book in front of me. It doesn't say too much about the Egremont Galbraiths, but there were two sets of Galbraiths in Manitoba.
I think the one you are most interested is the branch that included Duncan Galbraith--see the end for some info I've saved on him. The other branch began with a John Galbraith 1 (1787-1855) & wife Mary who emigrated from Belfast in 1813. Children included John 2 (1817 who married Mary Anne)-(no mention of others, but I suspect one other founded Duncan's line) John 2 had William Charles & John 3, who lived in Camden, Ont.
Wm. C. married Jane Ager in 1860. 6 children before moving west. Margaret Jane, James(m. Honor Grimstead, 10 children, John 4, William Charles Jr (m. Sarah McEwan), Hamilton, Sanford. Seven more born out west, but only three lived. There's more in the book if they're yours.
Here's Duncan--in part.
William H. Waddell married Elizabeth Galbraith, sister-in-law to William Wilson. Three children: William Ernest (W. E.), Annie May, and "Ormie".
D. Galbraith - Duncan Galbraith (1861-1935). Neil Galbraith had married Janet Orr in Ontario. Children included Duncan, Annie (married to Wm. Wilson Sr.), and others.
Duncan came to Manitoba in 1897 with his nephews John & Jim Wilson and homesteaded SW ¼ 33-6-2. From 1906 to 1910, Duncan farmed SW ¼ 31-6-2 w.
"Duncan [Galbraith] lost his life at Brandon, Aug. 5, 1935. Excerpts from Brandon Herald: 'Injured in a cyclone that swept through the North Brandon district August 10, 1935. 'Monarch No. 10386, Canada's most Outstanding Percheron Stallion with more than 40 Grand Champions to his credit - died today.' Mr. Carl Roberts of Morris was the owner. Duncan Galbraith had been groomsman for the [previous] 5 years." (FIV, p. 813.)
Please contact me if you need info I have or can help with my jigsaw puzzle.

Would you do a look up to see if a William Curry who died Sept 12, 1921 in Owen Sound is buried there?
Father James Curry, mother Ann Clinton.
Would appreciate knowing if he was buried there.
Thanks,

My great grandfather owned and operated a tavern at Owen Sound in the late 1800's and/or early 1900's. Some information I have is that it was a rowdy place, and that some of my grandfather's siblings died on the premisis. I understand he and his wife and several of their children were buried in a large cemetary near Owen Sound.
My Grandfather, William Cullen Matthews, decided that "this was no way to live" and became a Minister (Methodist) I believe. He attended a Seminary just over the border in upstate New York. His first posting was to a Church in Hamilton Ontario. He later moved to Selma Alabama, where he ran a Railroad "YMCA". He died and was buried in Selma.
Please share any information you may have on my greatgrandfather. I have no idea where he came from or the exact timeframe, or location of his ownership of the tavern at Owen Sound.
I am also researching Matthews from this area. My gg grandfather G.M. Matthews was a hotelkeeper near Owen Sound in 1871.
Would like to exchange info.
Please contact me at my e-mail address.
Thanks,
Hi Darlene, this may be a little late, however,if you are still doing lookups for the Lakeview Cemetery I would appreciate your help. My gg/grandparents, Bejamin and Elizabeth Hallock are buried there. She passed away in 1888 and he in 1892. I would like to know gravesite numbers if possible. Also, I found out today that they are buried next to a Hurlburt M. Hallock, I have no idea who this person is or how he/she would connect with my Hallocks. Thank you. Bev - MI
Do you know if any Waddell's buried there. I'm not sure what her first name was but she was married for approximately two years . She died of Colitis. Wilfred Norman Waddell was her husband and apparently had an electrical shop around the late 1940's. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanx
This message will likely be too late to reach you before coming to Meaford but Lakeview Cemetery is in the town of Meaford on top of a hill overlooking Georgian Bay. Very pretty.
I am looking for any information on Roy Matthews and Norah Matthews(Baird). They resided in Durham and then in Hanover. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you
I presume Durham you mean is in Canada, not county Durham in the U.K. ?

I am looking for information about James Greer that will help me find the county in N Ireland that he emmigrated from in about 1840-55.
Any help would be appreciated.
Carolyn
My ggrandfather was james Greer, who emmigrated from N Ireland sometime bet. 1840-1855. He farmed in Euphrasia until 1901. I am trying to find some records that would tell me what county in N Ireland my relative came from. I have the records of his land deeds/mortgage, but they aren't helpful. His marriage certificate does not give that informaion either.
I would appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks so much.

I am looking for a McLeod family in Grey or Simcoe County. Does anyone know this family and their descendants?
Marriage:
Date: 16 April 1879 Place: Singhampton, On
Donald McLeod, age 33, Widower , Blacksmith,
b. Scotland. Parents: Alex and Mary McLeod
Sarah Jane Gilchrist, age 21, Parents: Alex and Sarah Gilchrist.
Both Presbyterian
I am searching for information on a Donald McLeod, family history said was born on Bernera Island, Scottish hebrides, m. Annie McKinnon in Tarbert on Isle of Harris, came to Grey county bef 1868. She died 1927 in Owen Sound. He died around 1921. Jessie Catherine McLeod was one of their childern.
I am the great grandson of Alexander McLeod (born 1849, died 1931), who was Donald's brother. The family settled in Canada from the Isle of Islay, Scotland on or about 1862 at Duntroon, where quite a few Highland Scotch ended up in their first years in what was then Nottawasaga township(it is now Clearview).
The family (including my great-grandfather) settled on the 8th Line near Glen Huron, Ontario in 1867. There is long tradition of McLeods in that part of the township, many of the descendents (my cousins) still live there.
By the end of 19th century, the lot had been divided into 3 homesteads, with Donald's parents (my great-great grandparents) taking the western part of the lot, and his brothers John and Alex (my great-grandfather)further subdividing the eastern half into two more farms still, at least one of these still in the family today. It's a gorgeous place, my grandfather always laughed that these folks chose the foothills of the Niagara Escarpment over the flat lands of Duntroon. "They missed the hills of home", he would say.
I would love to hear from you. Please e-mail me and I hope that I can provide you with more information.
Best Regards,
Shane Turner (my mom was the McLeod!)
Searching for the parents of Rev. Hubbard Millar, born November 12, 1879. He married Spearse Louise Yealland born Oct 6, 1879 in London, ON. Marriage date was Sept 22, 1910, in London. His father's name was probably John, a farmer. They lived in Dundell?/Dundalle?/Dundela?.
I checked microfilm but did not find an entry for LEEKE - that's not to say there isn't one, but I did not spot it. Is there another possible location?
Thank you so much for checking, we seem to be having a little difficulty with dates and where people were back then, they were quite the world travelers!
The 1901 census is now online, www.archives.ca and follow the archives research line. It is slow but it is free. It is only searchable by towns and province, not by surname.

Tracing family line and need help with dates etc. for grandparents who lived in Hornings Mills area on farm. They had a family of 8 children, one of whom was my father, David Walter Allen. Would appreciate any information/ideas of where I can obtain details, etc. you may have.
I am a descendent of Elizabeth Foster (born abt 1860). I beleive her father may have been Robert Foster (born abt 1821) and her uncle may have been Thomas Foster (born abt 1843). I beleive Elizabeth Foster, and two of the sons of Thomas Foster, moved to Saskatchewan. Are there any descendents of these people that could confirm Elizabeth's parentage?
Looking for information regarding Ayton. Especially interested in the early farms in the area. Would like to know history of the 1800's. Any information you can share is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance, Tracylynn

Does anyone have information of Cedenie Lagasse, she is the great- grandmother of my husband and we would like some information on her and her family.?
Thomas Henry Lougheed was born in 1861, his parents were Thomas Henry Lougheed and Elizabeth Lewis. The younger Thomas Henry Lougheed was married to Margaret Jane Marshall. They had six children Thomas Henry (Harry), Marshall, and four girls, whose first names I have not yet found. Harry married Anna Viola McInness from the Shallow Lake area. What I am looking for is the following. The Thomas henry Lougheed who parents where Thomas and Elizabeth was born in Normanby Township. His father died at an early age (35?) at which time Elizabeth married a Joseph Orr. In the 1871 census of Normanby Township, there is a listing for Joseph Orr (born 1814), Elizabeth Orr (born 1835) and at the same property there is this Thomas Lougheed (born 1861). When I checked the 1881 census for Normanby Township, I find that these same Orr's are listed and have a child of their own, but there is no listing that I can find for the Thomas Lougheed. I am looking for information that might lead to me finding where this person went to after 1871. If you can help me in any way or require further information please contact me. This Jospeh Orr (born 1814) is my great, great, grandfather. Thanks

Interested in locating any cemetery locations or information on Sewell family members in Markdale, Ontario or Grey County dating back to 1894 and onwards.
Hi out there!
In May of 2001, my husband Paul and I purchased what most of you might remember as the old Fleming Estate, at the top of the 9th St. hill. Since 1995, it has been known as The Highland Manor Bed and Breakfast. We are very interested in talking to anyone who may have any knowledge of the history of the house, from its construction by the Ross family in the 1870's, up to and including the Fleming family. There is an "urban legend" in Owen Sound that this was once a home for unwed mothers. Although we have documented proof that it WAS a private maternity hospital run by a midwife by the name of Margaret Moore, we would like to clarify just what the hospital was used for. If you can help with this or any other history of the house we would love to hear from you. Many thanks!! -- Linda Bradford
Hello
I recently searched the history on my house which is in Owen Sound and found the City Directories located in the library were quite helpful. They do not have every year but there were quite a few years from 1900 to present day. They are indexed by name and by house address.
hope this helps

I am researching my Cartwrights who were in the Owen Sound and Meaford area in the 1800s: William Cartwright born 1841 (family from Wales and Ireland), married Sarah Abercrombie 1865 near Owen Sound (could your Sarah be a grandaughter?) I am descended from their son, Robert Howell Cartwright (born 1866 in Meaford and moved to USA in 1888).
Yes, these families may be related. My Sarah's daughter was married in 1900, so Sarah would have been born in the second half of the century, but before 1870 for sure. So, I don't think she could be your William's grandaughter.
Do you know all the names of his children, and that there is no Sarah? Maybe William was her brother?
My grandmother wrote down that our Sarah had a connection to the spinning jenny. Whether she was mistaken and it was the Cartwright who invented the power loom, or that was her job I don't know. But, I am trying to find out.
Please let me know what records you have found for your Cartwrights, and I'll share anything I can, too!
Thanks!

My GGG grandfather was William Carson born in Leitrim Co. Ireland in 1788, married Anne ? and had two sons, Samuel and Dickson. After living in Armagh Ireland, Samuel and Dickson moved to Grey Co. Ontario around 1850 where Samuel (my GG Grandfather) had 11 children. Is there any connection do you think?
My gggrandmother Dorothy Carson Taylor (1825-1891) was a member of that family. We have a page of family history handwritten by my grandmother in the mid 1960's in which she mentions the 5 brothers who "came out to Canada together".
my gggrandfather was samuel carson who came to canada about that time too. can you send me a copy of the letter your grandma wrote and what were the names of the brothers. they sound like they could be samuels brothers. I know he had a brother dickson and david.

TELFER, RIDDELL, from Keppel and Leith... Late 1800's
by
I am trying to connect some pieces of my genealogical puzzle. I have a few old letters written by ancestors and there are references made of friends and neighbors in the areas of Keppel and Leith. I am searching for info on Telfers and Riddells who originated in the Hawick area of Scotland and came to Canada in the mid 1800's, some of whom settled in Grey Co. Some of the references made in my letters are of: Gedion Harkness; Betsy and Robina Easton (who had a dress maker's shop in Leith until 1890); John or Jack Riddell; Edith Riddell. Any info regarding the above would be appreciated. Thanks, Jerry
Any information on my grandfather Henry Wellington Lougheed's parents - Robert (1848-1930) and Jane - would be most appreciated. Robert was born and died in Collingwood Twp. and that is about all I know.

I have recently discovered a connection to Sydenham:
Robert Grierson m. Janet Usher 11 March 1852.
I knew from old documents that Janet and her 3 sisters all went to Canada but this is the first real lead I've had.
I have looked around and managed to find some material online relating to Sydenham, including W. W. Smith's Gazetter and Directory of the County Of Grey for 1865-6, where a Robert Grierson is listed as a magistrate.
I also found Janet & Helen Usher enumerated in the 1851 census in Grey County.
Does anyone else have any tidbits of info that might relate to these people at all?
We have been tracing our family tree and are looking for any information on John Sullivan Lot3 Con3 Bentinck Twp or his brothers Lot4, Con3 Bentinck around the settlement time 1854.
I'd appreciate any information on them or their family.
Thankyou
Jim Sullivan
I'm not sure I can help but this lady may. She is a Canadian researcher. I live in the States and she has helped me a great deal. (I have reimbursed her postage, etc.).
jophiel@sympatico.ca
She gave me this Sullivan data --
James Sullivan (1840-1907), son of Perry Sullivan/Catherine Karney married Eliza Hopps (1845-1876). He was born in Verulam, South Cayuga. Eliza was born in Bentinck, Grey County.
James Sullivan (1839-??), son of Peter Sullivan/Catherine LNU, maried Margaret Ellen Hopps (1839-????) on 27 Dec 1864. He was born in Durham, Ontario. Margaret was born in Bentinck, Grey County.
As you can see, I think something got mixed up here. If, by chance, you have the correct data, I would be delighted to compare/exchange info if you are willing.
Thanks.

I have a birth certificate of a Mary Jane Flummerfelt Born October 4, 1891 in Owen Sound.
I would like to find some members of her family,I believe her to be realted to the McInnis famiy, or Dankert.
She later married a man by the name of Utley, any help would be appreciated.
I have a friend who was married to a Flummerfelt. He was killed in a logging accident, leaving two young boys and a wife. This happened in BC and it's such an unusual name that perhaps this would help you.
Good luck on your search.
I am searching for information regarding the Gottfried and Johanna Bluhm family. They were said to have lived in Guelph for a time before relocating to Chatsworth. Three or four children died during an epidemic in Guelph--Thyphoid, Cholera or Diptheria, I think. They had a new family, the first born in Guelph (Lena) and Wilhelmina & Gottfred were born in Chatsworth. Gottfried had a brother named Michael Bluhm.
I am looking for information on the Frederick (1848-1910) & Christina (1849-1927) Bluhm family. They had several children while in this area of southern Ontario. They moved to Oregon about 1883+/-. Christina was from the Moehnke family probably from Sullivan, Grey County.
Portlaw was founded by the Thompson brothers Frank, George and Albert after their birthplace Portland Ireland. It was sometime between 1830 and 1860 does anyone know the exact year.
Searching for descendants of Henry HEWITT who married Ellen FARRELL, both buried in Dundalk Cemetery. Two known children Vinton & Violet Hewitt died in childhood.
I have found records of Fitzsimmons family ancestors that indicate they lived in Goring. Believe that is/was an unincorporated area in Grey County but have not been able to find the location. Would like to search 1901 census & would appreciate narrowing down my search area. Does anyone know what census area would have included Goring?
Thanks!

It was on 11th Line of Euphraia Twp. 30 minutes from Markdale.
I live at Goring. You will find the census in Euphrasia Township, Grey County. Euphrasia Township is now the Municipality of Grey Highlands.Goring is situated on Grey Road 12 north of Markdale.
Groing has to be Ontario's smallest community. It's got four houses, one on each corner of an intersection of Grey Rd. 12 and some other road. If it weren't for the four blue signs that say "Goring" on them that are each located no more than 100 meters from the intersection, you would not even know you've been there.
