I am trying to find the burial site of my great-grandfather, William Lawrence Hilts. Born: Egremont Twp., July 7, 1852 and Died: Egremont Twp., March 25, 1893. He was married to Mercy Rebecca Smith (July 23, 1855 - January 9, 1938)
William died from "Brain Fever".
In 1889 he lived at Concession 11, Culross Twp., Bruce County. (His wife was born in Culross Twp.)
The informant of his death was his father-in-law, Bleakney Smith.
I have his death information, but it does not state where he would be buried.
In 1865 William's father lived at Con 3, Lot 48 Egremont Twp., Grey Co. The name is also spelled HILTZ at times. On the 1871 Census, there is a Lawrence HILTZ listed in Egremont, but no age given:

Hello. I have found a woman, Margaret Hornsby, who can do a look up for the Hilts Cemetery in Egremont. Only Hilts family memebers are buried there. You may already know this...but here goes anyway.... Sheila
Does anyone know where the Duxbury Cemetery is located? Which town/village? Perhaps there's an actual street address. Any information is appreciated. Thanks.
Duxbury's Cem. is located at Lot 25, Concession 7, St. Vincent Twp. Didn't see any "Langley" in the list, which is available from the Bruce & Grey Branch of the O.G.S. for a moderate fee.
Thanks for the information, Bob. I appreciate you taking the time to reply. I was able to get a copy of the cemetery listing from the National Library in Ottawa.

I read your details with interest. My late grandfather, also called John, emigrated from the Isle of Man to Liverpool, UK, sometime around 1910. He was by trade a ship painter.
Although there is no evidence of any family relationship, and the obvious distances and times involved, I found it interesting that they both had careers associated with maritime activity.
If you have any further details about this previous John Skilling I would be fascinated to read it.
Hello, John
John Skilling of Leith was my Gr Gr Grandfather. He was born circa 1816-1818 in Scotland and was a ship's carpenter in Leith (Edinburgh).
He married Marion Cochrane. She was born in 1828 in South Africa; the daughter of a British Soldier whose Regiment was sent there to quell some early Boer uprising. She returned to Scotland with the family upon completion of her father's military assignment.
She married John and they emmigrated to Canada on or before the year 1853 as my Gr Grandfather John jr. was born in Galt Ontario Dec 8 1853.
After that year, they relocated to Leith Ontario near the Owen Sound shipyards on Lake Huron as John Sr. was assisting in building ships for the Union Army during the American Civil War.
In the year 1864, John Sr. fell from the topmast of a ship and was killied no doubt leaving the now family of six in dire circumstances.
Records of the family are fairly well intact from John jr.'s generation forward but information on John Sr, and Marion are almost non-existant. (You now know what I Know about them)We will however keep searching and will one day find a clue that will enable us to learn more about them and subsequently be able to trace back to earlier generations in Scotland.
It was very nice to read of your interest in our family and hope this will be of further interest to you.
I find it great making contact with another Skilling.
I also have a great amount of information on the Skilling family so if you are doing any research or have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
I live in Orangeville Ontario Canada. (About forty miles due North of Toronto)Tel: toll free 1-877-680-4975 e-mail robertskilling@sprint.ca

I have a copy of the Meaford 1901 census with the families of Thomas Silver, age 26 and Benjamin Silver, age 63 listed. If this is information you don't have I'd be happy to look up the details for you.
Hi there, I was wondering if there is a listing for Wellington Minard, or a Hugh Robinson in the Meaford 1901 census? I can't find them anywhere else and I know later in the 1900's they lived there. Thanks in advance for any help you can lend.
Meaford? I couldn't resist. IS there possibly a reference somewhere to Hamilton's, Joe Henry? Rachel Saunders? Edward Thomas? Milton Clark? Charles Loomis? or Harriet Phillips? Last name Hamilton, except the two girls. Anything at all!!!!!!!
My best friend is Delyla Silver. I suspect that all of the Silver's in the Meaford cemetery are related to her. If you are still interested, I can ask her if she wants you to get in touch with her.
Brenda
My Silver ancestors came from either England or Scotland. Someone once told me that the Silvers of Meaford were of German origin. Does your friend know anything about that?
Thanks.
I am trying to find out some information on the McAuley family who settled in the Dundalk area, especially where some of them may be buried, and also where they came from in Scotland. The parents were John and Jennet (lots of alternate spellings), and one of their sons was named Kenneth. Kenneth eventually married Jane, but I don't know her maiden name, and they moved to Manitoba. I have found many alternate spellings of the last name, but McAuley and McAulay seem to be the most common. Any input is appreciated.
Judy, do you have date of birth for John. My grandmother's (Effie McAulay) family resided in the Dundalk area, and one of her brothers was John. Many of the brothers moved west in the early 1900s. There were 11 siblings. Some are buried in Dundalk, Markdale, and surronding areas.
Judy & Janice, My John McAulay was born in 1807 and died in 1903. He came to Canada from Port Ellen on the Island of Islay off the coast of Scotland and settled in the Village of Priceville. He and his wife Jean Stewart had 17 children but several died young. John is my great great grandfather and his son Walter is my great grandfather. Walter moved to Parkinson Twp. in Algoma Dist. in the late 1800s or early 1900s when there was cheap land to be had ($.20 an acre-I read somewhere). I don't know where John and Jean are buried, but to my knowledge they did not move West. I have the names of most of John and Jean's children.
The John that I am looking for was born some time around 1813 in Scotland. He was married to Janet or Jennett, who was born around 1826, also in Scotland. They had 9 children that I know of - Kenneth (1847), Sarah (1849), Margrett (1853), Mary (1855), Neil (1858), Catherine (1859), Christinie (1861), Jennett (1863), and John (1865).
I am a descendent of Norman MacAulay, he is buried in a cemetary in Melancton township, on highway 10. He came to Canada in 1849 with some brothers.
The County of Grey in 1865, from "The Gazetter of the County" shows Allan McAuley Concession 1 Lot 224, Neil Mcauley Concession 1 Lot 225, Angus McAuley Concession 1 Lot 225, Kenneth McAuley Concession 1 Lot 223 & Norman McAuley Concession 1 Lot 225. I assume these are brothers.
Norman is buried at Melancton United Church Gravel Road Cemetery, Concession 1 Lot 296. There are other Macaulay's buried there. This is a cemetary on Highway 10.
They also came from Invernesshire, Scotland. They are perhaps the brothers of Norman.
John McAulay - July 7, 1882 death age 63.
Christena McAulay - died February 19, 1892
Catherine McAulay - died September 7, 1974 wife of Donald McAulay age 60 years.
Flora McAulay - February 23, 1873 aged 53 years wife of Kenneth McAulay died April 8, 1894 aged 82 years
Kenneth McAulay son of Donald and Catherine died January 18, 1867 aged 19 years 5 months.
McAulay, Donald died April 27, 1868 aged 67 years.
Norman's son Neil married Mary Ferguson... do you know who her parents were? Also... what was Norman's wife's name... looks like Euphemina in the Census.
James Plester born on January 21, 1878 in Hopeville is my great-grandfather and I am interested in any information about him. His parents names were John Plester and Sarah Ann Ferris. He had seven brothers and sisters, married Pheobe Carter in 1904, and died in Duncan, BC in 1951.
Hello Dianne:
Walters Falls is north-west of Toronto, Ontario towards Owen Sound.
Hwy 10 from Mississauga/Brampton (west edge of Toronto) and Hwy 6 from Guelph area meet at Chatsworth (approx. 15 miles south of Owen Sound). A road (#4) to the east leading off Hwy 10 (just south of Chatsworth) will take you to Walters Falls.
Holland Township is one of the townships making up Grey County (actually part of North-Grey). Walters Falls is in the North east corner of Holland Township.
Owen Sound is at the junction of Sarawak, Sydenham and Derby Townships. Holland is right below Sydenham Township.
Two cemetaries I know of are Walter's Falls United and St. Phillips Anglican; across the street from each other. I believe they are in the north of the town; off the main street. The road is a dead end.

Hello Brian:
Thank you for the information. We have been trying to find out where the falls are all summer. We are from Northern Ontario and we were in Brampton 2 weeks ago. We will probably be going again at the end of September so we will use your helpul information and try to visit the falls. Do you know if they are open to the public. Let me know if you can.
Thanks again,
Dianne
Found the following online; it seems the falls are open. Have not actually seen the falls myself; Yet!
Below is the web address and a cut/paste clip from it.
Good luck.

Walter's Falls
The village of Walter's Falls is worth a stop for its old mill site, stone church and historic cemetery. John Walter built a sawmill here in 1852, and later a grist mill and a woollen mill. Fire destroyed the historic sawmill in 1984, though the woolen mill still stands. At the sawmill site, Walter's Creek drops 14 metres over the Niagara Escarpment cliff face.
The beautiful old stone church in Walter's Falls, St. Philip's Anglican Church, was built in 1885 from Escarpment limestone, which outcrops in the fields around the church.
To get to Walter's Falls, turn south from Highway 26 at Woodford on County Road 18, which becomes 29, and follow the signs to Walter's Falls.
From Owen Sound, follow the directions to the Rocklyn Creek Management Area above.
Hello! Are you a Walter? Walter's Falls is just south and west of Collingwood, Ont., in Grey County. It is about a 20 min drive from Owen Sound, Ontario which is west and north of Walter's Falls. It is inland from Georgian Bay. Walter's Falls is in Holland Township. It is about a 2 hour drive northwes from Toronto, Canada.
David and William Grier left the county of Wexford Ireland in 1842. David bought land in Leeds County (Lansdowne) and his brother William took up residence in Holstein, Grey County. I understand William had a son David. David Grier was my Great grandfather and we are interested in finding out some information about him.
Am searching for descendents of a David Grier born approximately 1865. Father - Nathaniel Grier, mother- Sarah G. Stoneouse. David is the oldest of 5 children. Possible a set of twin bros. born l867 and 2 sisters. Nathaniel taught school in Normanby Twp. Sarah died from childbirth in 1882.
No records on this family after death of Sarah.
Nathaniel remarried and has a second family we know about.
I have a Grier family name in my family history. They, too, were from Ireland who ended up in the Grey & Bruce Counties area. I don't have my notes in front of me at present, but if you'd like to email me I could tell you what I have,or give you the email addy of a man who might be able to help you better.
This will be of no help now. I am just getting started and hope to contribute later.
My great grandfather was James grier Irish Decent (a carpenter by trade). He married Rose (German decent). I think in North hastings Ont. CA in 1881 at least they had all of their children there. Elizabeth. Sahra, Gustin, Charley, James Andrew, Lydia and Wyrom. Charley was my grandfather.
So, I will be trying to find the link to Northerland and how many generations were there before Scotland.

Are you related to the Mackey family from Grey County? My great aunt Sarah Jane Mackey was born in St. Vincent Township and married John Francis Saul in 1881, also in St, Vincent. There may be no connection, but I thought I would try. I am trying to find out more about her.
As far as I can tell, Daniel Peckover from Aynho parish, Northamptonshire, England was the first Peckover in Mount Forest, Ontario. He's related to Royal Navy Gunner William Peckover, from the same parish, who was an officer aboard William Bligh's HMS Bounty and also sailed with Captain James Cook to the Pacific. Below is what I have on Daniel. Can you fill in the Mount Forest and Ontario blanks for me? I've got the family traced back to the mid-1500s in England.
Dennis Bell in B.C.
Daniel Peckover (born April 13, 1822 Aynho parish, Northamptonshire died Jan. 13, 1902 Mount Forest, Egremont Township, South Grey County, Ontario, Canada). He married Mary Howse, after they both immigrated to Canada. Mary came over in 1832 with 11 other members of the Howse family. The owners of the Cartwright Estates in Aynho offered free transportation to the New World to an undetermined number of families working the land, after the estate slumped into unprofitability. The Howse family was one of several known to have accepted. However, Daniel was only 10 years of age when the families left, the youngest child in the Peckover brood, and travelled with the Howse family, as far as can be determined. The families that left England for Upper Canada in 1832, probably from Liverpool, moved en masse into Pilkington Township, Waterloo County in what is now central Ontario, near Guelph. The exercise was a forerunner of a much bigger exodus from the British Isles that followed 15 years later, as more than 1,000,000 Irish headed across the Atlantic seeking relief from starvation, the potato famine, disease and poverty. Daniel and Mary had married by the time of the 1851 census and were living in Wellington County. He listed his age as 29 in the census, she was 28. There is no evidence of children, and childbirth may have been what claimed Mary’s life in 1855. Daniel appears to have remarried to Frances Boulding from Heckington parish in Lincolnshire, fathering a dozen Peckover children with her. He may have returned to England following Mary’s death and married Frances Boulding there circa 1856, or the Bouldings may have emigrated to Ontario. In any event, Daniel reappears in Canadian records in the 1871 Ontario census, listing himself as a farmer, living near Mount Forest in Egremont Township, South Grey County, Church of England by religion, married to “Frances Bolden.” It is also interesting to note that a fair number of Pickhavers were born in Heckington parish back into the 1600s, but no Peckovers are listed in the parish by the LDS IGI.
His First Wife: Mary Howse (born Dec. 23, 1823 Aynho parish, Northamptonshire died Feb. 17, 1855 Pilkington Township, Wellington County, Ontario) at the age of 32. She is buried at a large Howse family gravesite in the Pioneer Cemetery, Rose Garden #2, at Ponsonby, on the Wellington County Road near Guelph, Ontario. Daughter of Thomas Howse and Mary Churchley, the sixth of their nine children. Thomas, born in Aynho in 1788, died in Pilkington Township, Wellington County, Ontario Oct. 7, 1874. Mary Churchley was born in 1787 in Aynho parish and died in 1860 in Pilkington Township, Wellington County, Ontario. Pilkington Township, incidentally, is named after a fly-b-night wheeler-dealer, Robert Pilkington, who swindled Chief Joseph Brant and the Huron Indians out of many thousands of acres of Indian lands in central Ontario following their service to the Crown in the War of 1812.
Their Children: unknown, probably none
His Second Wife: Frances Boulding or Frances Bolden ca. 1856. (christened March 13, 1836 Heckington Parish, Lincolnshire died ? after 1871). The Bolden spelling comes from the 1871 Ontario census. Daughter of Charles Boulding and Charlotte Bedwell. Note: He may also have been married to an unidentified sister of Frances Boulding briefly and two of the children listed below may have been the sister’s. Some of the children may also have been born in Heckington parish, Lincolnshire, England prior to 1870. One of his first wife’s brothers married a Boulding woman in Canada well after 1832.
Their Twelve Children:
1. Daughter - Emma Peckover (born 1856 died 1937).
2. Son - Andrew Peckover (born 1858 died ?).
3. Son - Charles Peckover - (born 1860 died ? ).
4. Son - Daniel Peckover (born 1860 died ?).
5. Son - Samuel Peckover (born 1862 died 1949).
6. Daughter - Lusie Peckover (born 1866 died ?).
7. Daughter - Lottie Peckover (born 1868 died ?) Married Charles William Robb in 1889.
8. Daughter - Elizabeth Peckover (born ca. 1868 died ?).
9. Daughter - Mary Peckover (born 1870 died ?).
10. Son - George Thomas Peckover (born 1870 died 1938).
11. Daughter - Annie Peckover (born 1873 Ontario died ?).
12. Daughter - Susan Peckover (born 1875 Ontario died ?).

I am trying to contact the Dennis Bell who (according to an archived message (May 2000) on the Northants (UK) list) was writing a history of Peckovers and Pettifers in various counties of England. If you see this Dennis, please let me know your current address. Many thanks.

Hi:
I am related to David Marr, Sr. who was born in 1743 in Easton, PA and moved to Norfolk County, Ontario to what they called Marr Hill or Marr Hollow. If anyone has any information about him or his family please write. I would love to hear from you.
Egremont historians have updated the History of Egremont (originally published in 1983)and have reprinted it. Egremont is being amalgamated and will vanish so it is very far sighted of these folks to preserve their (our) history. The book gives histories of each concession lot and traces families from the areas of Mount Forest, Holstein etc. It's a big book, well bound, containing photographs etc. There is an article in the Kitchener Record -- to purchase a book ($45 for the full updated version, $20 for the update only which I think is 1983 to the present??). I know that the Wellington County Archives has the original book and that some area libraries will lend.
HEATHER ARE ANY WALTER DYCE /ROSS/VIOLET ROGERS (ANN-JOHN ROGERS. WILSON IMMIGRATED FROM SCOTLAND. MENTIONED IN THIS BOOK. WHAT IS THE COST OF THIS BOOK IN USA DOLLARS? THANKS FOR YOUR HELP
I've recently traced my gggrandfather, Henry GILES, b. 1813, to Egremont on the 1861 census (C1027, p. 53 (9?) line 43. I was wondering if there is any mention of this family in updated version of the History of Egremont Township.
Henry's wife was Martha b. 1811, and their children were: William b. 1838, Robert b. 1841, John b. 1843, Thomas b. 1847, Henry b. 1848, Margret b. 1852.
If there is mention of this family, I wonder if the book is available on interlibrary loan.
Any information will be much appreciated!

I would like to find any information about Duncan Bell, buried Rocky Saugeen Cemetery, 1842, and also a grandchild C. B. Smith who lived at Port Elgin in 1943.
I have a Louisa Lawson Neilson in my tree. She married Albert Dean Pegg (in Ontario I believe). Albert was born in 1869. Louisa's birthdate is March 20, 1876 and she died Sept. 12, 1950. They had six children: Walter (a Pegg name), Irvine Neilson, William Kenneth, Albert Russell, Edna Mae and Harold Lloyd. I have no further info on the children, but I do have a bit more on Albert Pegg's family. It is interesting to note that much of Albert's uncles and cousins moved to ND (Pembina County) between 1885 and 1899. In 1903 most of the famly moved to Saskatchewan for homesteading! You might want to check the Dominion Land Grants on the Saskatchewan website. Let me know if you have any information to help tie these families together. I have found no proof that Albert and his father moved to ND with the other Peggs as of yet.

The Library in Owen Sound has a copy of these records. If this is not accessible, e-mail me with your inquiry and I'll check, I photocopied some of these when I was there this summer!
You might try St. Mary's Catholic Church in Owen Sound. These records may have been taken there for safe keeping. Or, St. Mary's may be able tell you where to look for them.
St. Michael's Church was destroyed by fire, but I assume that all the records would have been transfered to Owen Sound.

Hi., not sure if you've found the info your looking for., But my great grandfather was/is James Byers from Hampden/Normanby and his Father I believe was Thomas, if we're talking about the same family?
I can try to get the information from Great Aunts or Grandmother.
Thank you for responding.
I have no idea if this is the right family.
I am trying to find a Margaret Byers who married a Robert Flummerfelt, erhaps on September 12, 1887. I am only guessing that she is Thomas' daughter, since he did have one nameds Margaret.
I thought everyone from Normanby had died. Once again, thanks for responding.
Linda
I now know that the Margaret Byers I am looking for was the daughter of William and Margaret Byers, of Normanby. Her siblings were: John, Robert, Christina, Barbara, Richard and James. This Margaret married Robert John Flummerfelt, September 12, 1887.
Are you searching this family?

Hello Allan Just saw your message on the internet. I am also researching info re McKay& Davidson in that area. My father was Wm John Watkins McKay born in Shallow Lake in 1898. His Father was John McKay and Mother was Mary Davidson . They are buried in the Collingwood Presbyterian Cemetery, were they moved to sometime in the early 1900s. They had 10 children --only two boys --one being my father ,the other named George . I know his family. I am looking for the grave sites of my greatgrand parents -----that may be in Keppel or sarawak Twsp. They are George and ? Harriet McKay and Joseph and ------ McMillan.Davidson Apparently the McKays emigrated from northern Scotland --Sutherland and the Davidsons from Ireland. I am currently looking into my family tree. My GGG grandfather, John Wardell lived in Egremont Township approx. 1870's. He lived on lot A Con 7. If anyone has any information. I would appreciate it. He married a Nancy Stephenson. On a county map we have there were Stephenson's to the North of his lot. If anyone has any information concerning this I would greatly appreciate it.
John later moved to Highway 89 just West of Shelburne. The top of the hill where he lived on the highway is know as Wardell hill.

Art, I don't have proof of this, but I believe it likely that Isabella Burchill, wife of Jason, was the sister of Ann (Nancy) Brown McAleer. Nancy's husband was William McAleer, a farmer in St. Vincent Twp. Nancy was born in Co. Tyrone Ireland around 1817 and was in Vaughan Twp, York Co.in 1851 and in St Vincent by 1861. Their son John McAleer married Nancy Burchill, dau. of Jason and Isabella. Isabella's maiden name was also Brown and she was born in Co Tyrone in 1812. Nancy Brown McAleer named her first child Isabella. Wm and Nancy McAleer were my gt gt grandparents.
What a nice surprise to find your e-mail on the Grey County Forum today. Every little bit of information helps at this point as a few things are starting to fit together. I do hope we can prove this as Nancy and Isabella's birth location just might be invaluable. Thanks again.

Any info on George C. Manners or Mary Thorburn. They married and had 2 children at least, Joseph Dawson Manners and George Manners, they may also had a sister. I have George C. Manners listed as being born in Perth Co. in 1856 but I believe he lived in this area during his adult life. He was a harness maker.
Im taking a trip to Owen Sound this weekend to do some genealogical digging.
I was wondering if anybody who is familiar with the area had any suggestions for places to visit?

Not like other free message board, I get paid for using their BBS message board. You can also place a BBS on your site and start making money too!
