Despite the agonizing debate over a possible three-per-cent property tax increase, most Ottawa residents will actually see their taxes go up at least 16 per cent -- more than $350 -- this year.
For some, increases could top 25 per cent, or $560, largely due to provincial property assessment. And that's not counting water rate increases of three per cent on the average bill and a catalogue of other increases, ranging from child care to bus fares, to recreation and parking.
Homeowners whose tax bills have been landing at the door lately should not be fooled into thinking that what they see is what they owe. The notices are based on last year's taxes and do not reflect the current situation.
