Its interesting that the brewing beer is allowed commercially as long as the ethanol is removed before sale. What about the other volatiles, fusel oils and aromatic mind-altering constituents of wine/beer?
I am not a theologian but I understand that there is nothing in the Koran against alcohol. It recommends guarding against overindulgence e.g. of alcoholic beverage until inappropriate behaviour manifests. Did you get a sense of whether ethanol was specifically implicated for the ban on liquor?
