You have to take it like a man Craig and admit you screwed up.July 24 2003 at 11:52 PM

Response to A question of etiquette..
You made two major mistakes Craig.
The first, assuming that a formal invitation meant he would pay for the meal. The second, assuming he asked you to choose the wine because he hoped for a good one rather than the cheapest.
Admit you were wrong and offer a mea culpa. Invite the couple (formally) to an even better restaurant – preferably one with 3 Michelin stars. On the invitation you should state that this is in apology for the embarrassment you caused them at the last dinner due to your lack of social/ dining tack and manners.
Have a beautiful meal with superb (and expensive) wine and when the bill comes pass it over to him saying ‘Your turn as I paid last time’.
Before he can open his mouth in protest ,thank him profusely for his generosity, get up and leave mumbling something about needing to urgently check the temperature in your wine cellar.
