I just sent an email saying nearly the same thing, but about watches, this morning.
Our approach here on ThePuristS' has always been to share the approach and point out the signposts of quality, but to encourage and leave the final personal judgements to the individuals. Afterall, these things are to be enjoyed! Otherwise, what's the point? I'm dogmatically anti-dogma!
Interestingly, my experience with Salon (about 5 bottles in my life) seems to differ quite a bit from the implied impressions in your post. I have always found it closed, almost harsh; hard would be another apropos description. Wonder what went wrong? Should I give it another try? The one's I tried were about 5-10 years old vintages from the drinking date.
