Response to Restaurants for dinner before Boardway Show, needs help
In my experience one rarely finds exquisite cuisine beneath the glossy facade, though I am willing to accept that I have been unlucky. I look foward to hearing and trying the recommendations in response to your question.
Only in three places have I had truly great food. Daniel, Jean-Georges and Le Bernadin (for traditional continental, modern continental and perfectly cooked fish respectively). All will get you in an out in time for a show although it will be a tragedy not to go with the tasting menus in each case.
Babbo also get's my vote as the best Italian. (I tried Il Mulino just once and was not at all impressed).
If eating on a budget, I like Lupa. It's the only great value I know of in NYC. There's at least one common person in the partnerships that own Babbo & Lupa and the food is of very nearly the same standard. If anything the pasta is more special at Lupa (try the Gnochi with Fennel ragu or the Bavette with goats milk and cracked peppers if you go)
