I am not sure I am ever entirely satisfied with any "upscale" Chinese restaurants, but

Response to Yujean Kang in Pasadena

Yujean Kang's is certainly as close as most get.

There is also Mr. Chow's in Beverly Hills, but I don't consider it "real" Chinese food.

For real, serious Chinese food, I'd try any of the nicer looking spots with long lines in front over in Monterey Park or further east.

Unlike most other cuisines, long lines at Chinese restaurants is a more reliable indicator of food quality than in most other ethnic cuisines.

I took my parents, very traditional Chinese from their generation, to Yujean Kang some years ago. I got scolded - for being so wasteful, to spend so much money on food that, by strict traditional Chinese tastes was really barely a shadow of "real" Chinese food.

(somewhat tongue in cheek, as I know there are MANY that won't understand the irony of the comments, or refuse to accept them in their proper context.)
