Indeed, a little (very little) of the strong stuff dabbed to certain spots on naked skin is different and better than splashing it all over clothes (as some people do).
The oils and essences need the fatty secretions on your skin to form more subtle and complexed aromatic esters than normal clothes can provide.
I think the problem with the 1980s was a yuppie attitude of "Greed is Good and More is Better" so we got chunky atomisers like Niagara Falls-strength. if you look at antique perfume paraphenalia, you see exquisite tiny droppers and bladder-atomisers that applied or "puffed" perfume.....
Not like Henry Cooper and Brut - "splashing it all over"
