Vue de monde is one of the most well known occasion restaurants in Melbourne. Chef and owner, Shannon Bennet started the original restaurant in an unassuming corner building in Carlton in 2000 and quickly made a name for himself amongst local foodies, with the use of premium ingredients and immaculate traditional execution.

In 2005 the restaurant expanded in a new space at the historic Normandy Chambers in the Melbourne CBD. The food became more tricksy and a little more hit and miss to my palate, but there were still some inspirational dishes including a trout, subtly smoked at the table, that I recall very fondly.

In June 2011 the restaurant again moved, this time to the top (55th) floor of the Rialto Building with commanding views over the entire city and Port Phillip Bay. The multi-million dollar fit-out emphasised Australias history, with kangaroo covered tables and chairs and an outback dunny (no photos, sorry!).

The menu is now heavily focused on local produce, which is to be applauded. Again there were some hits and misses, but overall it was a special dining experience, with some theatrical moments that live in the memory, and a great selection of wines from their deep cellar.
