For SF I'd recommend

One Market and Lark Creek Steak. Looking forward to reading your dining experiences of your NorCal trip.

My favorite dining experience . . .

. . . from the time I lived in the Bay Area (late '70s) was Des Alpes, which is, regrettably, no more. My understanding is that Piperade is run by the same owner and/or chef. Give it a shot . . .

Oh, and if you're driving thru Fairfield . . .

. . . you've gotta stop at Dave's Giant Hamburger.

I haven't had a burger in 21 years, but I'm going back to my carnivorous habits if passing thru.

The other greasy spoon of note in the Bay Area is Giant Chef Burger in Pleasant Hill . . .

. . . which is a great breakfast place.

That was so many years ago. Is it still open? They had the best antipasto ever. Great pasta too.

Napa and SF recommendations

Well you have some winners on your possible list and some, what IMHO are over-rated losers.

Winners in Napa: Redd has always been reliable and good. And if the weather is nice eating outside is wonderful. If you want three star stuff, then I would pick Meadowwood over French Laundry. I have found French Laundry to be fussy, overpriced, and frankly a loser. On the other hand Meadowwood has a lovely site and better food.

In SF Acquerrello is great for fancy Italian. Gary Danko, One Market and Tommy Toys are not recommended. If you want California cooking go to Boulevard. If you want fancy French go to La Folie. If you want Bistro go to South Park Cafe. Romantic medium range Italian go to Venticello.

Hope these suggestions help.
