Michal Repik (left) scored a pair of third period goals Saturday night to lead the Vancouver Giants to a 3-2 win over the Chilliwack Bruins. Repik, who has been in on every Giants goal scored in this series, was the 1st star on a night which saw Vancouver take a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference Quarter Final.
In a scoreless first period, the Bruins had the better of the chances, especially on a 5-on-3 power play which lasted more than a minute. However, great work by the penalty kill unit plus solid netminding from Tyson Sexsmith kept the game scoreless into the intermission.
The Bruins had their chances early in the middle frame as they had a 4-on-3 power play opportunity for just under two minutes. After failing to connect, Mark Santorelli was found all alone in the slot, but his wrist shot would be robbed on a great glove hand grab by Sexsmith.
Chilliwack eventually would be rewarded on the power play as Oscar Moller snapped home a shot from the left face off circle that beat Sexsmith. Santorelli and Nick Holden help Moller get his 2nd power play goal of the series at 8:45.
A few minutes later, the home team responded with a power play goal of their own. Spencer Machacek released a bullet of a drive from the top of the face off circle that blew by goalie Mark Friesen. Repik and Mario Bliznak get the helpers on Machacek's 2nd of the playoffs at 13:38.
Vancouver got into the lead for the first time on the night early in the third period on a beautiful passing play. Jonathon Blum snapped the puck up the ice from inside his own line to Repik who broke behind the defence. His move to the backhand gave Friesen no chance. Brent Regner gets the other assist on Repik's 2nd of the series at 1:14.
Chilliwack pulled level with another power play goal. This time Brandon Campos from the corner found a wide open Santorelli in front. His deek to the back hand beat Sexsmith down low. Evan Pighin also hits the score sheet on Santorelli's 1st of the post season at 5:15.
Both clubs had numerous chances down the stretch but were unable to convert as the game looked like it was destined for overtime.
Repik had other ideas though as he received a great stretch pass up the middle from Regner before going on to snap a shot high past Friesen to the top corner. Repik's 2nd of the night moved him into top spot in the WHL playoff scoring race and it came with just 58 seconds left on the clock.
Friesen would get to the bench for the extra attacker, but the Bruins weren't able to get the equalizer as Vancouver hung on for the one-goal win.
Final shots on goal favoured the Giants by a total of 33-22. This was a penalty-filled match-up as the Giants finished the night going 1-for-7 on the power play while Chilliwack went 2-for-8.
Now with a 2-0 series lead, the Giants prepare to see the series shift to the Fraser Valley. Game 3 will go Tuesday March 25 at Prospera Centre. Game time is 7:00pm.
