Pats' Weal, Davidson make mid-term rankings

The Leader-Post

January 12, 2010

Jordan Weal and Brandon Davidson of the WHL's Regina Pats are officially on the radar for the 2010 NHL entry draft.

When Central Scouting released its mid-term rankings on Monday, Weal was ranked 45th out of 211 North American-based skaters while Davidson sat 57th.

Weal, 17, also appeared on Central Scouting's preliminary rankings in November, when players were grouped by league. He was rated 10th out of the top 25 WHLers while Davidson, 18, was 22nd.

Weal, the runner-up for WHL rookie-of-the-year honours last season, is currently fourth in the league scoring race with 60 points, including 20 goals, in 45 games. Davidson, an undrafted list pickup, has been a breakout rookie performer for Regina, notching 26 points in 32 games while leading the team in plus-minus at +17. He recently missed 10 games with a knee injury.

The Moose Jaw Warriors have four players on the mid-term list: Defenceman Dylan Mcllrath (27th), forward Quinton Howden (29th), defenceman Kendall McFaull (93rd) and forward Antonin Honejsek (116th). Wilcox native Jaden Schwartz of the USHL's Tri-City Storm came in 41st.

The top-ranked skater in North America is Windsor Spitfires left-winger Taylor Hall, who was a standout for Canada at the recent world junior championship in Saskatchewan. He's followed by centre Tyler Seguin of the OHL's Plymouth Whalers and Windsor defenceman Cam Fowler, who played for the U.S. at the world juniors. The top WHLer is Brett Connolly of the Prince George Cougars (No. 4).

Calvin Pickard of the Seattle Thunderbirds is the No. 1-ranked goaltender in North America, followed by Jack Campbell, who was the hero for the Americans in their gold-medal win over Canada.

Mikael Granlund, who played for Finland at the world juniors, is the top-ranker skater from Europe, followed by Russian forwards Vladimir Tarasenko and Maxim Kitsyn.

The complete rankings appear in ScoreBoard.
