Hitmen blanked in exhibition opener

Hockey - The Calgary Hitmen fired blanks in their Western Hockey League pre-season opener Wednesday night, a 3-0 loss to the Red Deer Rebels at Airdrie.
The Hitmen generated 34 shots, but couldn't put a puck past Rebels netminders. Kraymer Barnstable stopped 13 before Bolton Pouliot, who was credited with the win, entered at 11:39 of the second period and blocked another 21 shots.
Lane Scheidl converted on a Red Deer power play at 17:30 of the second period. Adam Kambeitz made it 2-0 at 45 seconds of the third period and Tyson Ness scored an empty-net goal with 53 seconds remaining in the third.
The Hitmen and Rebels clash again at Innisfail on Saturday night.
