Vancouver Comes Up Short Vs. Chilliwack
It's a case of two teams going in the opposite direction as the Vancouver Giants lost their 4th straight, while the Chilliwack Bruins won their 6th in a row 2-0 Wednesday night at the Pacific Coliseum. Lucas Gore made 36 saves for the shutout.
The Bruins opened the scoring just after a Giants penalty expired as Robin Soudek scored to make it 1-0. That is how things would stand through 20 minutes.
From the opening whistle it was clear this would be a physical game. Tyler Stahl had a big hit on Michael Burns behind the Bruins net early in the 2nd period. Burns went down and eventually was taken off on a stretcher after suffering concussion like symptons. He was taken to Vancouver General Hospital for further tests. Moments after play resumed a line brawl broke out and Vancouver's Neil Manning and Greg Lamoureux, along with Chilliwack's Tyler Stahl and Jamie Crooks were given game misconducts for being part of the second and third fights. As a result the Giants were down to 15 skaters. Vancouver pressed in the second, firing 16 shots on net, but were unable to beat Lucas Gore. The Bruins still led 1-0 after 40 minutes.
Vancouver continued to pour it on on third, but were getting no puck luck around the net. Unfortunatley, Chilliwack's first shot of the period would find the back of the net. Roman Horak would score for the Bruins to make it 2-0. From there Gore shut the door, stopping 12 shots in the period and 36 in total for the shutout. Vancouver finished 0-for-7 on the power play, while Chilliwack was 0-for-5. With the Giants loss and Kelowna's win Wednesday night, Vancouver falls 8 points back of the Rockets for first in the B.C. division. The Bruins trail 2nd place Vancouver but just 4 points.
The Giants are back in action Friday night when they play host to the Prince George Cougars for the eighth and final time this season. Game time is 7:30pm at the Pacific Coliseum. The pregame show kicks off at 7:00pm on AM 650.
