Surrey's Wotherspoon models himself after Seabrook

Tyler Wotherspoon fashions his game after Brent Seabrook and he could certainly do a lot worse.
Seabrook, a Tsawwassen native, is one of the top shutdown defencemen in the world and Wotherspoon -also a Lower Mainlander, from Surrey -has embraced that role most of his hockey career.
"I feel comfortable with that game," said Wotherspoon, who's just finished his second season with the WHL's Portland Winterhawks. "I've played that way all my life, being that shutdown, confident defenceman that you can rely on. I like to have a good first pass, but I mainly do shutdown of the top line, being physical down low. I didn't have much of an offensive role this year, but I do feel capable of doing it in the future."
Wotherspoon, who's a solid 6-foot-2, 200 pounds, was 40th in the NHL's Central Scouting Rankings among North American-born skaters, falling from No. 33 in the mid-season rankings.
Portland head coach Mike Johnson thinks Wotherspoon will be a good pro. "He's really developed over the last year and a half," said Johnson. "He had a great season this year. He's a real steady two-way defenceman, a good puck-mover. I think he'll have a similar role in pro. Everybody is looking for puck-moving defence, and the bigger the better. I think he's a smart all-around player. I think he's got more offensive potential than he gets to use in our group of defencemen."
Growing up in suburban Surrey, it's no surprise Wotherspoon was a Canucks fan.
"I actually had seasons tickets with my family," he said. "We used to go to a lot of the games as a kid growing up. I'm a big fan of the Canucks. I followed the run this year, so it would be great to go there."
