The Whistle Sounds On Prince George
Jackson Whistle backstopped the Vancouver Giants to a 3-0 victory over the Prince George Cougars Tuesday night at the Pacific Coliseum, earning his 1st career WHL victory and 1st career shutout. The 16 year old made 20 saves for the win. The Giants finish 7-1-0-0 in the season series vs. the Cougars.
Celebrating his 18th birthday, Dalton Sward opened the scoring for the Giants, snapping his 13 game goalless drought. Brendan Gallagher later scored on the power play, potting his 28th goal of the year, to give the Giants a 2-0 lead through 20 minutes.
Trying to keep pace with Gallagher in the goal scoring department, Jordan Martinook tipped home a Marek Tvrdon point shot on the man advantage for his 26th goal of the season, putting the Giants up 3-0 on the Cougars after two periods. The score could have been much worse if it wasn't for Cougars goaltender Drew Owsley, who made 11 saves in the 2nd frame.
Jackson Whistle shut the door the rest of the way, making 7 saves in the final period to earn the victory in his sixth start of the season. Not only was it his first career shutout, it was the Giants first shutout of the year. Vancouver finished 2-for-8 on the power play, while the Cougars went 0-for-5.
The Giants are back in action Friday January 13 when they take on the top team in the WHL and the #1 ranked team in the CHL, the Tri-City Americans. Game time is 7:30 pm at the Pacific Coliseum. The pregame show begins at 7:00 pm on AM 650. It is Viva Las Vegas Night at the rink on renfrew; one lucky fan will win a trip for 2 to Las Vegas.
