Davidson inks deal
June 1, 2012
Defenceman Brandon Davidson damaged his shoulder in the WHL playoffs against Moose Jaw and was unable to join the Oklahoma City Barons for their AHL playoff ride as an extra body but the Regina Pats' captain had won over the Edmonton Oilers long before that.
The Oilers liked Davidson's offensive juice (49 points) in Regina, also the soon-to-be 21-year-old's leadership ability, and signed the 2010 sixth-rounder to a three-year entry-level contract.
Davidson's three-year breakdown wasn't announced but he likely signed for about the same money fellow 2010 pick Kristians Pelss got. The Oil Kings' winger, picked 19 spots after Davidson, got $1.7 million ($50,000 to play in the AHL and $565,000 if he were to make the Oilers).
Davidson will join fellow Pats blueliner Martin Marancin as they try to earn AHL spots. Marancin got into six late-season games for the Barons, but didn't play in the post-season.
It's unlikely the Oilers will sign two other 2010 draft picks - fourth-round defenceman Jeremie Blain and sixth-round winger Drew Czerwonka - by the June 1 deadline which means both will go back into the draft pool.
