Cummine shows strength and stamina

Scott Cummine of Regina won the Western Canada's Strongest Man contest, held Sunday in front of the Legislative Building, for a record fifth time. In the process, he won five of the six events.

Brad Provick of Regina was second, followed by Jay Smith of Edmonton.

Cummine, Provick and Smith are to participate in the Canada's Strongest Man competition, which is to be held in Quebec City in August and be televised by TSN. Cummine was third in the national event last year. The top two finishers in Quebec City are to advance to the World's Strongest Man competition in Malaysia.

Mark Schweiger shot a hole-in-one Monday at the Royal Regina Golf Club.

Schweiger aced the 105-yard 11th hole. The feat was witnessed by Sam Kliman, Greg Bacon and Trent Reddekopp.

The Regina Pacers finished second at the Okotoks Canada Day Classic bantam AAA baseball tournament on the weekend.

The Red Deer Braves defeated the Pacers 9-7 in the final. The Pacers had earlier beaten Red Deer 4-2 in the tournament's round-robin portion.

The Pacers advanced to the final by defeating the Okotoks Red Dawgs 5-2 during a semifinal, in which Ben Komonosky had a tworun home run and teammate Alex Galloway added two more RBI. Winning pitcher Conner Chaulk went the distance for the Pacers, who also got an RBI from Troy Treslan.

In the consolation final, the Regina Buffalos defeated the Saskatoon Jays 13-6, with Jordan Bourassa earning the win. The Regina White Sox advanced to the fifth-place game before losing 12-2 to the Saskatoon Braves.

The Team Saskatchewan Junior Pats are competing at the 23rd annual Brick Super Novice International Hockey Tournament, which runs until Sunday at the West Edmonton Mall.

In opening-day roundrobin action on Sunday, Toronto Pro Hockey defeated the Junior Pats 5-0. The Junior Pats' Ethan Ernst was the game's third star. Junior Pats goalie Damion Lindskog stopped 21 shots.

On Monday, the Minnesota Blades were outshot 20-13 but edged the Junior Pats 1-0. Junior Pats goalie Spencer Welke was the second star.

The Junior Pats, whose roster consists of 2002-born players from across Saskatchewan, are sponsored by the WHL's Regina Pats.

The Regina Wolfpack midget AAA baseball team finished second at a tournament in Miles City, Mont., on the weekend.

A team from Dickinson, N.D., beat the Wolfpack 5-0 in the final. The Wolfpack had a 3-1 round-robin record.

Terrell Walker went 3-for-4 with two doubles in a losing cause as Silver Screen defeated the Gordon's Hawks 9-6 in Western Cycle Rambler Park Fastball League action on Monday.

Leroy Keetwatin earned the pitching decision over Ryan Decosse.

In the nightcap at Rambler Park, the Regina Gold defeated the Moose Jaw Canadians 8-5. Dean Holoien had two home runs for Moose Jaw.

The Regina Angels edged the Regina Buffalos 7-6 to win the Canada Day midget AA baseball tournament on the weekend at Optimist Park.

Lee Brown was the winning pitcher. Chris Brooks got the save.

Desiree Ates homered to help the Gold defeat the Impact 11-0 in Regina Ladies Softball Association action Monday at Douglas Park.

Keysha Jansen was the winning pitcher.

The Ehrlo Soccer League is a free drop-in league for youth between the ages of eight and 18. Games are to begin next week.

Ehrlo Sport Venture Programs and volunteer coaches will be instructing at parks in Glencairn, Heritage Park/Core Ritchie, Argyle Park and North Central.
