How do I waterproof canvas?

I'm an aspiring boat builder. Have done a lot with plywood and cypress strip. I would like to build a canvas canoe. I tried a canvas Kayak but it leaked like a sieve after three coats of exterior Acrylic paint. Slowed to seepage after seven coats. It has since been recycled. Call me a slow learner but I want to try canvas again. Can't resist the light weight. Can anyone give me some pointers on how to keep the water on the outside of the canvas where it belongs?
Thanks
Chuck
