I'm looking at a 30+ year old Old Town Otca that the owner has said needs recanvasing, and so is selling. I am a complete novice at this process, and am wondering if this is a project that should be seen before jumping into, or if there is sufficient reference material out there to guide me? I don't know of anyone in or near South Louisiana doing this work.

Hi John
Recanvassing a canoe may seem daunting at first but is really quite straight forward. The best reference book on the subject is "The Wood & Canvas Canoe" by Jerry Stelmock and Rollin Thurlow (ISBN 0-920656-49-8). In this book you will find detailed descriptions of canoe construction and repair - including recanvassing. To find the canoe builder closest to you, I suggest that you go to the web site of the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (www.wcha.org) and look in the 'Builders and Suppliers Directory'.
I hope that these references will give you the information you need and the encouragement to tackle this project.
Good Luck
Doug
