He's what I consider a musician's musician. Kinda like how my brother hated early MegaDeth and I loved them. Then when Marty Freedman came in he liked them because of all the precision guitar work, but to me they started sounding bland and repetitious.
Staley had a very unique voice and sang very deep lyrics with catchy original rythms and ideas. Cantrell is just training and skills, but brings little to the table for original ideas. I realize that every time Staley fell off the wagon, Cantrell had to pull the band together to make commitments and tour dates. For that I think he's a good dude, I just really miss Staley's style and think his absence makes a hole that will never be filled again.
Kinda like how even though Brian Johnson has good range and pitch and such, there will never be anything to fill the void left by Bon Scott.
