Pieter Alex van Spall married Classina Georgina Gerdeman June 21, 1865. Both lines are somewhat mysterious. We think Pieter came from the Netherlands, and Classina's family was already rooted in Suriname, possibly native to Suriname. Paramaribo is the central city on what little we know. The van Spall family was engaged in the plantations of the time. Does anyone know anything of these families?
Looking for information on the GERDEMAN family. I believe that Johanna
Spalburg is my great-grandmother's (Classina Georgina Gerdeman) mother,

I am having a tough time getting information on the slave naming
practice when the Dutch freed the slaves in Suriname on July 1, 1863.
I have been told they usually received the surname of the planation
owner who owned them. Can anyone confirm this?
The gouvernement started to registrate familienames in 1821. the slaves at that time had only a first name, but kept in the so called " slavenregisters"
Before abolition in 1863 the plantation owner was
called to fill in a so called " Borderel" because for every slave the plantation owner could get 300 guilders
at that time a lot of money.
After the abolition 32.000 slaves became free.
And they where free to choose their own family name.
Some of them took the plantation name other the name of the owner and others fantasies their own name.
Before abolition it was forbidden for not whites to have the same name (familyname) as the owner.
The white population was afraid that the mixed generation could enharitated the goods of the plantation. If the owner still wants to give his nam to a child he needs permission from the Court of justice. " Hof van Justitie)
