[Baroness Belle van Zuylen, Isabelle de Charriere (1740-1805): 'I do not have the white hands.'(1764)]

It’s with great pleasure I can finally show you all the face of Baron van der Duyn, who I have been discussing a lot. His case, next of that of Maria Jacoba van Goor who was Isabelle de Charriere’s granny, really got my research started when I found a poem (1) ‘A son teint noit et basané (About his black brown colour)’(1764) by his friend, Isabelle de Charriere, baroness Belle van Zuylen (1740-1805) and (2) several other leads by her that he was ‘swarthy’ and his family was famous for being ‘swarthy.’ This made me very curious. Imagine, a Dutch baron who was black brown! Where did he come from, how is this possible. His family was one of the oldrest and noblest in Holland.

[James Boswell, writer. Self-described as 'black,']

According to James Boswell he was (3) ‘chimney sweep’ while his wife, Anna Margaretha van Aerssen was ‘black as chimney.’ She was the granddaughter of the first Surinam governor Cornelis van Aerssen van Sommelsdijck. Boswell was a grandson of Veronica van Aerssen, a sister of Cornelis van Aerssen. He describes himself as ‘black’ and is described as ‘swarthy with black eyes and black hair.’

Yet from all these families we are shown only white portraits. These are in my view revisionist portraits to hide that Europe was ruled by a black and coloured elite. Some looked like Classical Africans, and others were dark mulatto types or looked more Asian or white. They were most likely descendents of the original Europeans who came from Africa 40.000 years ago. The whites came only 6000 years ago. Some of these black Europeans claimed blue blood and became the old nobility and royalty (1500-1789) in Europe. Blue blood stood for black blood and was symbolised by a Moor, a classical African, and pitch black in colour.
