SCREAMO-HARDCORE. This is a limited one-sided 12" by ADORNO from Portugal. ADORNO play screamo-hardcore with really intense vocals. Noisy, distorted, melodic, beautiful, emotive sad sounding music. The songs on here are genuine and honest. It's rare when a band like this comes along and sticks so close to how this style should sound, but ADORNO has accomplished this sound to perfection. This is what screamo-hardcore really is - chaos and melody intertwined. Buy if you like any '90s-esque screamo.

CAPSULE - Blue (2008/ROBOTIC EMPIRE) LP+CD 14,50 €
POST-HARDCORE. "Blue" is a confounding conglomeration of blasting time-signatures, galloping hardcore spirit and a ghostly vocal chorus that buzzes through a mountain of guitar and bass. Blurry, buried shouts are surrounded by thunderous songs played at every tempo in the hardcore and metal spectra. Intricate melodies in bizarre tunings sneak their way into an overall unnerving amalgamation of genres, creating an anxiety-filled album of fevered beauty. CAPSULE sounds like no other band. HARDCORE. VUUR ("fire" in Dutch) are from Belgium. With this record they offer 7 new song recorded with their new singer. They play a heavy mix of screamo-violence, dark hardcore and a hint of modern crusting elements. If your into a chaotic heavy mix of ACME, RORSCHACH and REVERSAL OF MAN you should take note. On the flipside you'll get the Dutch band GRINDING HALT. Already known to be the band of ex-members of SHIKARI and THE LAST MILE. Like many bands in Groeningen GRINDING HALT is mixing fast hardcore parts with heavy, almost stoner/sludge parts. It's the perfect blend between heaviness and fast hardcore. If you want this record, you'd better be quick - just 520 copies got pressed!

POP/INDIE-PUNK. New Jersey pop-rockers CRASH ROMEO have everything. They've got the hooks, the looks and a set of songs so assured that it's almost impossible to not see them being thrust into the mainstream limelight over and over again across the next twelve months. Good stuff indeed. "Gave me the clap" is 11 songs of pure pop-punk and will have you singing along instantly. CRASH ROMEO delivers the catchiest album of 2008.

DATURAH - Reverie (2008/GOLDEN ANTENNA) DoLP 15,50 € / CD 11,- €
POST-ROCK/INSTRUMENTAL. Take the vaporous fumes from the heavy lilting post-rock from the likes of ISIS and PELICAN and EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY, splash in a little bit of the psyche ala the Blade Runner soundtrack and you're still only touching the surface of DATURAH's creative impetus. Hailing from Frankfurt/Germany, this instrumental combo stretch their riffs through audible taffy pulls and seep in crisp and thinly layered synths along with half buried samples to create a listening experience that jolts the senses. They may rock their instrumental guile a bit heavy at times but it's all weaved into a trance-inducing and ambient sojourn into a vivid panorama of love, fear and anger exhibiting.

ELLIOTT SMITH - Xo (2008/PLAIN) LP 16,- €
SINGER/SONGWRITER. This 1st full-length recording from ELLIOTT SMITH is finally being reissued on vinyl. Since the release of "Xo" a decade ago, ELLIOTT SMITH became one of the most recognizable names and faces in acoustic music, with numerous albums and 7"s recorded before his untimely death. If anything, SMITH's songwriting continues to improve, as each of the 14 tracks displays his inarguable mastery of the pop song structure more clearly than ever. The feel throughout is light and understated. SMITH's impossibly angelic voice is easy on the ears and occasionally. If you have any interest in this man or in smart, well-crafted pop, you've just gotta pick it up.

GUTTER TWINS, THE - Saturnalia (2008/SUB POP) DoLP 16,50 € / DigiCD 14,50 €
ALTERNATIVE-ROCK. THE AFGHAN WINGS' Greg Dulli and SCREAMING TREES' Mark Lanegan team up on their debut album as THE GUTTER TWINS. Combining traditional rock grandstanding, with twisted undertones, a smattering of blues and the finest traditions of American alternative-rock, "Saturnalia" is not an album that will pick up your spirits, but there is a beauty to be found in something that seems sound of the more painful corners of life. The cumulative effect proves internal yet epic: the netherworld symphonics of MOGWAI, SIGUR ROS and BOHREN UND DER CLUB OF GORE are touchstones, alongside the sprawling emotions of PINK FLOYD. Still, what Dulli and Lanegan achieve here ultimately feels like the determinedly individual product of two auteurs coming together.

OMAR RODRIGUEZ LOPEZ - The apocalypse inside of an orange (2008/INFRASONIC) DoLP 18,- € / CD 14,- €
POST-ROCK. "The apocalypse inside of an orange" is the next in a series of albums written while OMAR RODRIGUEZ-LOPEZ was living in Amsterdam in 2005. As the name on the album implies, the tracks included are performed by the OMAR RODRIGUEZ-LOPEZ QUINTET, the band that toured Europe in late 2005. This 60 min., limited edition double-vinyl features 7 new tracks as well as a previously unreleased version of the song "Jacob van lennepkade" that 1st appeared on OMAR's self-titled (aka Dutch) album in 2005.

THIS WILL DESTROY YOU - s/t (2007/MAGIC BULLET) DoLP 17,- € / DigiCD 13,- €
INSTRUMENTAL-ROCK. The follow-up full-length to the incredibly successful and acclaimed "Young mountain", "s/t" picks up where the band left off and manages to push the instrumental-rock genre forward via 7 tracks of unpredictable vindication. Soaring passages somehow find harmony with more ambient and contemplative elements as the disc seamlessly uncoils over a span of 52 min.. If "Young mountain" was an indicator of what was to come, "s/t" is the express lane to getting there. This is a landmark album by a band that will inevitably be mentioned in the same breath as MOGWAI and SIGUR ROS without hesitation - dive in!

TRICLOPS - Out of africa (2008/ALTERNATIVE TENTACLES) LP+CD 13,- € /DigiCD 14,- €
POST-ROCK. Experimental music can be too far fetched to be enjoyable. Like an artistic outreach, experimental music so often points the ears in a direction they do not wish to go. TRICLOPS' newest release, "Out of africa", manages to tramp this would be fine line; making it somewhat more decipherable, but just as obscured. TRICLOPS (ex- and current members of VICTIMS FAMILY, FLESHIES, BOTTLES AND SKULLS etc.) do their best to keep you guessing throughout "Out of africa's" 7 tracks; ultimately making the 39min. of warped sonic sounds worthwhile. Instead of sticking to generic formulas, or trying to be too subversive, TRICLOPS does a good job of creating a new sound. The only exception is that, at times, this album sounds too much like AT THE DRIVE IN or THE MARS VOLTA. Vinyl version includes the CD as well!

PUNK/MELODYCORE. There's been a lot of water under the punk-rock bridge since PENNYWISE first emerged at the beginning of the '90s, but their 9th album "Reason to believe" proves that they've not felt the need to jump on any bandwagons to stay relevant. As one of the definitive West Coast punk outfits, PENNYWISE have been often imitated but rarely equalled by bands that followed in their wake. Nor have they become hollow imitations of themselves - "Reason to believe" may not have the raw youthful grit of their earlier material, but there's no compromise on pace, melody or content. Still fast, hard-hitting melodic punk with a rough sound and poignant vocals. You can't go wrong here, folks.

RESTARTS, THE - Outsider (2008/DIRTY FACES) LP 10,- €
PUNK-ROCK. This is the 3rd and maybe the best RESTARTS album and it's far more close to "Slumworld" and not that polished and clean as "System error". In fact this 13 track full-length album is really good, dirty, catchy and fueled by angry punk-rock out of Hackney/London. Packed in an nice looking cover, a poster and lyricsheet. THE RESTARTS is one of the few bands that appeal to all the different scenes in the punk movement.

Record 2 includes their famous 1st "real gig", supporting BLACK FLAG, to an army of very angry skinheads in Hemet, California (1982). The deluxe packaging features a hand numbered silver foil stamped front cover, heavy duty sleeve, a 12" x 24" reproduction of the original promotional poster, the original insert and a copy of the rare flyer from the Black Flag support gig, of which only 50 were made in 1982.

POST-ROCK. The strain of post-rock that SILVER MT. ZION, GODSPEED YOU! The Montreal collective, known for now as THEE SILVER MT. ZION MEMORIAL ORCHESTRA & TRA-LA-LA BAND, continue to probe the disharmony between the beauty of art and the failure of culture on "13 blues for thirteen moons". The record opens in typically atypical fashion with 12 untitled clips of feedback, each of which lasts about 6 seconds, before rolling into four 13- to 17-min. long pieces. The band still knows how to move gracefully over the duration of long pieces and flash occasional glimpses of that once unrivaled crescendo toward catharsis. But on "13 blues..", it seems like S.M.Z. are more interested in making their own movie than just providing a backdrop.

HARDCORE-PUNK. This is the CD format of one of the best hardcore 7"s of 2007. It includes their "Final exit" 7" plus 2 bonus tracks from the same session and 7 live tracks recorded at the Lintfabriek in Belgium. Both their earlier 7"s on Grave Mistake Records are absolute shredders and this new 7" follows in the same vein of oi inspired hardcore-punk. These tracks are full of crushing power that won't let down fans of tough early American like NEGATIVE APPROACH and S.O.A and early BLITZ. These tracks could arguably be their best material to date.

BIRDS OF A FEATHER - Chapter 5 (2008/COMMITMENT) 7" 4,- €
SXE-HARDCORE. BIRD OF A FEATHER is band with many familiar faces from the Dutch straight-edge scene. All members are over 30 and still keep the straight-edge flame burning. MANLIFTINGBANNER, MAINSTRIKE, CRIVITS, BETRAY etc.. These 5 songs, recorded during the sessions for their debut-album: fast, to the point, energetic, taking inspiration of the classic straight-edge bands from the late '80s. The lyrics reflect on life, looking back, but especially looking forward, staying true to ideals, growing as a human being with compassion and gaining insight.

OLD-SCHOOL HARDCORE. Here comes the debut 7" from these german kids. Pretty straight-forward European style old-school hardcore. If you're into the Crucial Response style stuff then you will probably like this as well. There are 6 songs on this and every one of them is bursting with an abundance of youth-crew, posicore hardcore-fuelled energy. The songs are medium to fast paced and really hammer along like there's no tomorrow. The quality of the song structures and the recording on the instruments are top notch. Comes with nice artwork by Spoiler, too!

POST-HARDCORE. Richmond, Virginia's THE CATALYST follow up last year's split album with MASS MOVEMENT OF THE MOTH with 4 new raging blasts of grunge and stoner inspired hardcore on this special, one-sided 12". Limited to 700 copies, "Marianas trench" features colored vinyl, a silkscreened B-side, and full color jackets. Recommended for fans of PG.99, KARP, early MELVINS, etc.. The CD version called "Marianas trench + 9" featuring 13 pummeling tracks compiled from the "Marianas trench" 12", their split 7" with BRAINWORMS and split 12" with MASS MOVEMENT OF THE MOTH.

CAVITY - Laid insignificant (2008/HYDRA HEAD) CD 14,- €
POST-HARDCORE. While the climate of any CAVITY album could be considered hostile, "Laid Insignificant" has proven to be the most unhinged and ferocious occupant in the stable in the 10 years subsequent to its original release. While retaining the foundational elements of Sabbathian swagger upon which their reputation was built, this album proved CAVITY had more to offer in terms of compositional prowess. With added emphasis on faster tempos, layered chordal discordance, and an overall air of frantic desperation, this may stand if not as CAVITY's best album, then certainly as their most furious and scathing. Comes with remastered audio and added tracks from the original session.

CRUCIFIED / NO TRUCE - split (2008/ESCAPIST) MCD 7,50 €
HARDCORE. Two of California's most promising hardcore bands team up for a split release. NO TRUCE hail from Salinas, CA and deliver a punishing blend of metal-tinged hardcore with influences ranging from BURIED ALIVE, MADBALL, INTEGRITY and SICK OF OT ALL. CRUCIFIED call the North Bay of CA home and draw influence from ALL OUT WAR, MERAUDER and RINGWORM as they unleash blistering metallic-hardcore.

END OF ALL - The art of decadence (2008/BE-PART) LP 9,50 €
HARDCORE. "The art of decadence" is END OF ALL's 2nd full-length and it's probably the darkest stuff yet coming from these swedes. This new album is filled with songs of pain, deceit and decadence. Think modern crust mixed with blistering thrash and death-metal influenced parts by these ex member of WOLFBRIGADE. This album continues to deal out their own brand of raw aggression laced with the harsh realities of life. Totally awesome and 100% essential if you like scandinavian hardcore.

GRIMPLE - s/t (2008/PRANK) 7"col 4,- €
HARDCORE-PINK. This is a reissue of GRIMPLE 's debut 7" from 1993. This 4 song 7" was originally issued in a limited quantity on Homemade Records, quickly went out of print, and became sought after by collectors paying sky high prices. Classic tracks of a deft fusion between abrasive hardcore-punk and the (then-emerging) Bay-Area pop-punk sound. Re-mastered and repressed in all it's gnarly cut'n'paste gluestick glory. Members of GRIMPLE have since played in BUZZOVEN, BRAINOIL, WATCH THEM DIE etc.. This repress is limited to 300 copies on green vinyl.

INMATES - Now we talking hardcore (2008/EVEN WORSE) 7" 4,- €
HARDCORE. Finally clevelands finest grace us with some new material. These sickos don't slow down or hold back on bit since their amazing full-length and deserve 6 little fuckers on this 7". What you get this time? In fact these songs could just as well be lost songs from the same recordings. Friggin' clevo trademark - obnoxious, nihilistic, offensive stuff with some of their own twisted fucked up humor. In other words: fast, pissed, degenerate assholes playing hardcore the right way.

KORO - Speed kills (2008/SORRY STATE) LP 10,50 € / CD 10,50 €
HARDCORE. Now available on CD with the 8 song "700 Club" 7" and 3 different mixes of a 14 song rehearsal session including 3 never before heard songs as bonus tracks. For the vinyl - this is the infamous 11 track demo that the band completed in preparation for recording their debut LP in 1983, but they broke up before it ever happened. Some of these songs appear on the infamous KORO 7" but many are unreleased, giving a more lengthy look at this early '80s thrashing hardcore band from Tennessee. Comes with sweet packaging and along with the lyrics on the insert you also get a very thorough interview with the band from 2006.
