BEGINNING OF AN EXODUS?
"A former Georgia congressman who helped spark President Clinton's
impeachment has quit the Republican Party to become a Libertarian, saying he is
disillusioned with the GOP on issues such as spending and privacy. Bob Barr, who
served eight years as a Republican congressman before losing his seat in 2002,
announced Friday that he is now a 'proud, card-carrying Libertarian.' And
he encouraged others to join him.
"'It's something that's been bothering me for quite some time, the direction
in which the party has been going more and more toward big government and
disregard toward privacy and civil liberties,' said Barr, 58, a lawyer and
consultant living in Atlanta. 'In terms of where the country needs to be going to
get back to our constitutional roots, I've come to the conclusion that the
only way to do that is to work with a party that practices what it preaches,
and that is the Libertarian Party.'
"Barr said he has no plans to run for office. In his new role as the
Libertarian Party's regional representative for the South, he will help promote the
party's message and recruit candidates, he said."

REFUSING TO ASSIMILATE
"Assimilation - defined as the act of becoming part of or more like
something greater - is a hot-button issue these days. Whether alluding to the calls
for a return of the American Southwest to Mexico by the Reconquista movement
or the encroachment of radical Islam on the streets of Paris, the fact remains
that members of immigrating minority groups are increasingly refusing to
assimilate into the cultures of their resident countries. The lack of
assimilation by immigrants to the United States - both legal and illegal - is
culminating in an American identity crisis and poses a serious problem for the future
of our country."

WELCOME TO HAVANA, USA
"Fearing possible security risks, a Miami group withdrew its speaking
engagement request to a congressman who called Miami a 'Third World country.' U.S.
Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., was scheduled to speak about immigration issues
at Miami Rotary Club's weekly meeting, but the invitation was withdrawn after
his comments sparked protests, the Miami Herald said Thursday.
"'I knew speaking your mind could be dangerous in Havana,' Tancredo said in
a statement. 'I guess it's equally dangerous to do so in Miami.' Managers of
the restaurant where the meeting was scheduled said they received complaints
from employees and phone calls from residents objecting to Tancredo's

DEM GUV TO KILL ILLEGAL ALIEN CRACKDOWN
"A deal Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney signed allowing state troopers to
arrest illegal immigrants will be rescinded next month by the new governor. . .
. The agreement was opposed by Governor-elect Deval Patrick, who takes office
on Jan. 4, about the time the troopers will complete their training, the
Boston Globe reported Thursday. Richard Chacon, spokesman for Patrick, said the
new governor plans to immediately rescind the agreement as it adds more of a
burden to the officers' workload, and is 'impractical and unwise.'"

SLIDING DOWN THE RAZOR BLADE OF LIFE
"Continuing to vote for the majority of establishment candidates from both
the Republican and Democratic parties will accomplish nothing. Voters have been
changing the composition of their various and sundry elected offices for
decades, and nothing has changed. The country continues to plummet down the
proverbial slippery slope."

ATLAS SHRUGGED ON THE SILVER SCREEN
"It was published almost 50 years ago, and has sold millions of copies. But
only now is Ayn Rand's controversial individualist novel 'Atlas Shrugged'
about to become a movie starring Angelina Jolie. Ed Hudgins, editor of the New
Individualist, tells me that the screenplay adapting the 1,100-page epic novel
is only a couple weeks away from completion. Production is set to begin next
year with the release of the film in 2008. Mr. Hudgins says fans of Atlas
should be pleased that the adaptation is being authored by Randall Wallace,
the scriptwriter for 'Braveheart,' Mel Gibson's epic tale of Scottish freedom

BIG L VS. LITTLE L LIBERTARIANISM
"A number of readers wrote to say that they agreed with my analysis and had
left the Republican Party for the Libertarian Party. Among these is former
Republican Rep. Bob Barr of Georgia, who officially joined the Libertarians last
"Of course, people are free to do what they want to do, and if they want to
join the Libertarians, that's their business. But if their goal is to actually
change policy in a libertarian direction, then they are making a big
mistake, in my opinion. The Libertarian Party is worse than a waste of time. I
believe it has done far more to hamper the advancement of libertarian ideas and
policies than it has done to advance them. In my view, it is essential for the
Libertarian Party to completely disappear before libertarian ideas will
again have political currency.
"The basic problem with the Libertarian Party is the same problem faced by
all third parties: It cannot win. The reason is that under the Constitution a
candidate must win an absolute majority in the all-important Electoral
College. It won't do just to have the most votes in a three- or four-way race. You
have to have at least 270 electoral votes to win, period.
"...Over the years, I have known a great many people who have flirted with
the Libertarian Party, but were ultimately turned off by its political
impotence and immaturity. C-SPAN runs Libertarian conventions, and viewers can see
for themselves how unserious and childish they are. They show that the L
ibertarian Party is essentially a high-school-level debating club where only one
question is ever debated -- who is the purest libertarian, and what is the
purest libertarian position?
"At times, serious people have tried to get control of the Libertarian Party
and make it a viable organization. But in the end, the crazies who like the
party just as it is have always run them off. In the process, however, they
have also run off millions of voters who have supported libertarian candidates
at one time or another. After realizing what a waste of time the Libertarian
Party is, many became disengaged from politics and don't vote at all.
"The result has been that libertarian-leaning activists have been drawn away
from the Republican Party and the Democratic Party by the Libertarian Party,
leaving the major parties with fewer libertarians. In other words, both
major parties have fewer libertarians than they would without the Libertarian
Party, meaning that the net result of the party has been to make our government
less libertarian than it would otherwise be.
"My conclusion is that for libertarian ideas to advance, the Libertarian
Party must go completely out of business. It must cease to exist, period. No
more candidates, no more wasted votes and no more disillusioned libertarian
"In place of the party, there should arise a new libertarian interest group
organized like the National Rifle Association or the various pro- and
anti-abortion groups. This new group, whatever it is called, would hire lobbyists,
run advertisements and make political contributions to candidates supporting
libertarian ideas. It will work with both major parties. It can magnify its
influence by creating temporary coalitions on particular issues and being
willing to work with elected officials who may hold libertarian positions on only
one or a handful of issues. They need not hold libertarian views on every
single issue, as the Libertarian Party now demands of those it supports.
"I believe that this new organization would be vastly more influential than
the party and give libertarian ideas far more potency than they now have. As
long as the party continues to exist, unfortunately, it will be an albatross
around the necks of small-L libertarians, destroying any political
effectiveness they might have. It must die for libertarian ideas to succeed.
- Author and columnist Bruce Bartlett
FAMOUS LAST WORDS
"If you analyze it I believe the very heart and soul of conservatism is
libertarianism. . . . The basis of conservatism is a desire for less government
interference or less centralized authority or more individual freedom and this
is a pretty general description also of what libertarianism is. . . . I think
that libertarianism and conservatism are traveling the same path."

"They [the House of Representatives] are of the People.... Such an Assembly
cannot easily become dangerous to Liberty. They are the Servants of the
People, sent together to do the People's Business, and promote the public Welfare;
their Powers must be sufficient, or their Duties cannot be performed. They

The Alliance of Civilizations: War on Monotheistic Religions?
The Alliance of Civilizations would, when fully implemented bring
planetary religious liberty, at least for those taking their revealed religion
seriously, to a crashing halt. It would, inter alia require registration of all
religious schools with the UN under the arm of a to-be-appointed High
Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations. Interestingly, the same title
Javier Solana holds for the European Union: High Representative for the
Common Foreign and Security Policy.......
