Editor's Note: Was happy to find this in the mail when I returned from my trip to Nashville yesterday. Richard is happily back in the quad with other inmates while we fight to get him transferred to a facility where he can have the care he needs, hopefully closer to his family in Southern California.
Again he is writing a story gleaned from his conversations with other inmates..a strange tale, indeed.
LAND OF THE LOTUS EATERS
You are driving south on highway 50 in Northern California. You have just passed another great Trailer Park complex. Looks rather barren, doesn't it? Miles of narrow concrete access roads winding between thousands of 60 foot aluminum trailers. Just a few small trees, not doing too well.
To be honest, you are running at 80 plus. You won't really notice them or give them a thought. No one would want to live in a spiritually barren wasteland like this. You hold the throttle at 80 and keep on driving.
If you think about it at all you may wonder why they take a 3 bedroom 60 foot trailer with them when they travel?
The answer to that is, they don't. Those people are not travelers. Those 60 foot aluminum structures on wheels are not intended to be mobile.
That travel park is not an oasis for nomadic travelers. That trailer park is the permanent home of some ten thousand people.
Our Sociologists and "do gooders" keep writing about the need for affordable housing. It makes for a good "rallying cry". It ignores the facts.
Look around you. You are traveling thru a land that doesn't exist. (According to the sociologists who write for the L.A. Times.)
You are driving thru a hundred square miles of "Affordable Housing." California's Trailer Parks. To make this point clear, let me define "Affordable Housing."
It means that the houses rent for a little more than the State's housing allowance for a single mother with two children on welfare. That figure, by the way, is a precise one and well known. It is listed in all real estate rental manuals. It is the "bottom line" income for "affordable housing" renters.
California has pioneered the development of "pre-fab" Trailer Parks (to put its pre-fab trailers in).) A clever idea is it not?
"So, who gives a damn about pre fab Trailer Parks?" I hear someone say.
"Hey, I finally have your attention I see".
Stay with me. Its time to take a break anyway. So pullover to the next trailer park access road and park your car. You are about to enter a new world. Your life is about to change. Do you know where you are?
I know you don't, so, listen up. You are now in the fabled land of the "lotus eaters". You are in the drug users capitai of America.
"Hey, slow down. Lets take this one thing at a time."
"First of all, It is good to know that "affordable housing" really exists in California. I never did put much faith in L.A. Times reports anyway. I'll pay even less attention to them now."
"But, I really have a nice house in Malibu now. I don't plan to sell it even if it could buy me a dozen affordable homes."
"You have, however, aroused my curiosity. Why an Olympic length swiming pool in a trailer park where never more than a couple of mothers with kids use the pool at all?"
Hey, you're paying attention again.
Very flattering. But you didn't ask about the three tier stadium benches that run the full length of the pool. Would you believe me if I told you those bench seats were sold out last Saturday at $10 a seat?
I knew you wouldn't.
(Actually a special bus brought them in from Sacramento, Everything paid for by "friends"of the legislators.)
But there is another explanaton and its time I clued you in.
You have to know one more thing about this park though before I start.
I did tell you that the adults in this park are drug addicts, did I not?
Then here is the key to this puzzle. Something very few people know, because its contrary to all of the good advice your mother gave you. I am going to tell you, but don't tell my mother.
The fact is drug addicts have the world's best looking bodies. They make wonderful fashion models as you know from watching TV. If the job calls for a perfect body, call in a dozen drug addicts and take your pick.
They are all well muscled without an ounce of fat on them.
The reason for this is they do not look on food as a "mood enhancer," as all the rest of us do. They only eat when they are hungry, then stop.
America is the home of overweight people, except for drug addicts.So, since most of the adults in this trailer park are drug addicts, they are all lean muscled with flat abdomens.
Their arms and legs carry the exact amount of muscle nature intended with no fat. They have weightlifter's bodies without the bulk.
Visit us next Saturday at the swimming pool.
But come early if you want a good seat. The park will not sell reservations. Too much trouble with seating. Keep in mind you will be looking at beautiful women in their 30s and 40s who could start a war in any third world country.
