Retired Marine tackles bank robber

By SAEED AHMED
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 07/10/07

Timothy Armstead was at the Washington Mutual Bank on Candler Road on Tuesday afternoon to figure out how someone could have stolen $100 from his account, when a man wielding a fire extinguisher barged in and demanded that tellers hand him $2,000.

That set Armstead off.

Grousing there was just too much stealing going on, the retired Marine put down his young daughter and tackled the robber, knocking him to the ground.

"I just brought him down to the ground and told him not to move," he told WSB-TV.

DeKalb County police said the robber told bank employees the fire extinguisher was a bomb and they had five minutes to comply with his demands: He wanted $2,000 in $50 bills.

As employees scurried to the bank vault to comply, the unidentified man began loudly counting down the minutes, attracting the attention of Armstead, said police spokesman Michael Payne.

But when the robber tried walking out with the loot, Armstead – who now works as a custodian in a nearby store – knocked him to the ground and held on.

The man yielded without a fight, he said. And while they waited for police to arrive, Armstead said he lectured the robber on his poor decision.

"I just told him it was a very stupid decision and now you get to spend 20 years of your life just for taking some money," Armstead told the television station.

Armstead could not be reached for comment Tuesday night.

In the end, the bank got its money back. It was not known, however, whether Armstead recovered his.
