our beautiful dog Harry has come to the end of his life this afternoon....he has had cancer for two years. Though we knew it would come eventually, he showed no signs of suffering until the last few days, where he looked depressed. When I took him in to be checked, the vet told us that our dog had such character that most other dogs would have succumbed to the pain a long time ago...but....now it was time to help him, she said he was in significant pain, though you wouldn't know it just to look at him. I took him home so that we could all say goodbye, and right now my poor husband has taken him back there for the final time.
We are all torn apart right now, my nine year old son especially, Harry is ten, Chris is nine and the two of them grew up together.

So sorry Jenty, you're story mirrors almost perfectly my own when I had to 'gentle away' my dear friend Qeoss ( Chaos ) the mad kitty. I hope he gets to linger in your hearts forever and that his presence there brings a smile to your souls.

Malcolm said he slipped away peacefully, he just cuddled him and whispered in his ear all the while....he said it was the hardest thing he has ever had to do.
Chris is flip flopping with emotions, grief, anger etc - including anger at me for taking him in to be checked - otherwise "he would still be alive" and then flipping again to "but he was very sick and we didn't want him to suffer"...this is hardest on him - "Harry was my brother".
Storm is looking bewildered, she keeps looking for him. We are off camping this morning, and we are taking her with us, there is no way we can leave her without her friend being around for company.
This is going to take some time to get over, but we have some beautiful memories. And already we are looking at some of the places in the garden where he used to try to dig to China that we can dedicate to his memory.

sorry Jen. It's so hard to lose a beloved four legged friend. I had to do the same thing with my Springer Spaniel/German Shepherd cross a few years back....so heart breaking. I think dedicating a hole to China to Harry is a great idea
Take care

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I didn't see any pictures on the post but someone said Harry is a lab. They are such sweet dogs. I'm sure his presense will be missed. Sending you hugs.

it is perfect....behind that beautiful rock is where he used to dig a lot of holes which is why the plants are not very tall .... if you look carefully to the far right you may be able to see some recent excavations LOL......(actually not that clear)...
and he and Chris a just a couple of months ago....you can see his cheek bone is swollen in this pic, but he was such a trooper...and you can see the love between the two of them.
and now I am crying again.....it is so wonderful to have these photos.....
