Best life vest for Dragon Boating

December 28 2002 at 2:40 AM

Hello everyone,

I am new to this message board, so please bear with me if this has already been addressed in a previous thread. I am looking to outfit my team mates with a comfortable, non-restrictive PFD, ideally suited for the dragon boat stroke. Let's face it, the life vests they offer at festivals have seen and smelled better days and are not conducive to a truly great form. Which model or manufacturer would you recommend? The price, around $70-100 max.

Looking forward to your replies.

Festival jackets

December 28 2002, 5:15 PM

My jackets of choice are the style offered by the festivals. The festival jackets put the bulk where it won't affect the stroke; most in the back and a bit in the front, none on the sides. In Montreal my team borrowed a set of whitewater style jackets; they were the worst! I couldn't paddle as well as I paddle using TCBA jackets because I felt like a fat-guy.

I'm not entirely sure that jackets make much of a difference in paddling, more than anything I think it's just mental. If your arms are that low during any point in your stroke you've got to be doing something wrong! Regardless, I'll be using TCBA style jackets for as long as they are around, just have to deal with the wetness and smell!

Best Life Vest

Thank you for your reply. I guess I should rephrase what I mean by "proper form" . Some of my friends found that the PDFs offered up at festivals or during practice sessions caused some skin irritation around the back and sides of the neck. Especially after long workouts. They were looking for life vests that more comfortable and form fitting.

There is a new dragon boat specific PFD coming out in the next couple of months...you might want to wait until they're introduced.

i personally own a Lotus Sherman Life Jacket and find this to be the less restrictive jacket i've used over the years. good arm movement and no neck irritations.

PFD's

For a good inexpensive vest look at the Serratus Pullover PFD on the MEC website. It is only $77 Canadian. I have tried it as both my husband and son wear it. I find it less bulky than my more expensive white water vest. The only thing that we thought would be a problem was that fact that you have to put it on over your head as opposed to having a zipper on the side but that wasn't even a problem after the first couple of times.

My 2 Cents worth

Don't bother investing sponsorship $$ to PFDs for the following reasons:
- The regatta's keep changing the rules as to which one's you can wear and which one's you can't wear.
- PFD's are only good if they fit well. It's based on personal preference. I borrowed a friends PFD, and I thought I was going to die half way through a race.
- Very pricey (a good one will cost you close to $100 each)

Your money would be better invested in training and additional regattas. PFDs are offered at the practice site and races free of charge.

The only ones that were dissallowed were the inflatables. This was done by the harbour authority first, not the festivals.

Sure, the borrowed lifejackets are ok if you don't mind extra chafing on your neck and arm but it does affect how you paddle. I think that $80 to $100 for you own PFD is very reasonable when you look at the cost of other sports...what's a pair of hockey skates set you back now?

The best jacket I've tried is the Salus Comfort Fit. Especially on a hot day the fabric on the inside won't stick to your sweaty skin.

It’s all personal comfort and if it’s in your budget even better. Attached are models of PFD’s used by the Komodo Dragons. Lotus Lola Life Jacket, MEC’s Serratus FLAK & Serratus PULLOVER and the PFD sold by GWN (this model can also be purchased from Canadian Tire)

Dont buy your lifejackets from GWN! They're the people responsible for forcing us to all wear them! I still remember seeing kirkmann walking around the island in 2001 with his lifejacket on. It wasnt too hard to figure out who called the harbour police to the site that weekend

PFD's

It is unreasonable to assume that GWN was behind the whole PFD thing. Firstly and most important it costs them money to supply all those life jackets wo why wouldn't they rather have it be optional.

They were knee deep in the fight to make sure that the powers that be and DB could find a happy medium and we could still legally paddle at all.

No one is a saint, that's for sure, but try and get your facts strait before throwing stones.

Cheers

Please refocus on the question.

January 16 2003, 10:28 AM

Who called the harbor police? Who walked around with a PDF? Who cares? HISTORY! We’re been down this road before.

We have a genuine post asking for assistance, if you have nothing positive or no value to add find another post.

I'm just saying

January 16 2003, 11:25 AM

While I don't know the deal with the PFD wearing on the Island, I have spoken with him and I believe he had no interest in having the PFD rules get any stricter.

I of course could be wrong or mislead, but I am pretty sure a blanket statement about GWN being the evil PFD mongers is false.

Cheers

Best vest to use

Charliedog,

My DB team (Catch 22) uses the Salus "Eddy" Paddle and Sport Vest.

It has a high-back and nonrestrictive shoulder straps; basically looks and feels like a thick tank-top.

Check it out!http://www.salusmarine.com/product/eddy2.html

Keep your paddles wet!

Your best bet is Salus. They sponsor the Breast Cancer teams. I wear a salus and have no problems wearing it db'ng and for outrigger.

I find the Stohlquist WedgeE PFD (Unisex) a great lifejacket and it is affordable at MEC for $95. The Kokatat Orbit Tour PFD (Unisex) is not bad, but at $135 was a little expensive for me.

I agree with others and would suggest having your team members buy their own ... different body types, preferences and what they can afford will differ. I would keep team dollars to use for training, regattas, etc.

I sell Salus Marine Eddy Sport/Flex PFD's as well as use one myself.
It's by far the best i've used in the last 10 years. Offers a great range of motion with little restiction.
