The second set of the GWN time trials will take place on Saturday, Aug 21 and Sunday, Aug. 22. For those racing this weekend, a backup date Aug.28.
OBJECTIVE:
-to evaluate candidates for the premier
men, mixed, women teams. (Women team coach : Shane)
- to evaluate senior paddlers for the remaining positions for Montreal and Shanghai.
TRIAL :
Paddle OC1 on one side , 400m, using an approved DB paddle. First come first serve.
TIMES and LOCATION:
GWN Outer Harbour Facility, Sat 9 to 2, Sun. 9 to 12. Dragon boat practice 1 to 4 Sunday.
Lakeshore Boulevard East, turn south on Leslie, turn right on Unwin Ave.
EQUIPMENT: Kayak Sports Canada ( Michael Fekete)
will provide 3 high quality Albatross free of charge. Bring your own boat if you like.
COMMENTS: OC1 is easy to lern. Takes some 15 minutes or so. The test is in my opinion very relevant, same body position, similar hull speed as DB. As I said before, I am not interested in how you have arrived at your current paddling level - by paddling small boats,DB, cross country skiing, swimming, weight training, etc.
I am simply interested in what you can do on water, NOW. There is a lot of undiscovered talent out there, as Guelph trials have demonstrated. OC1 is also a very fast growing sport, come and have some fun as well, learn something new.
MARATHON VERSUS FLATWATER, advantages and disadvantages:
Marathon - same body position, but paddling on one side only. Not used to straight blade.
Flatwater : Paddling, as used, with straight blade on one side, but different body position.
Kayak: looks like nothing but disadvantages, but
kayakers learn the style I favour very quickly, and even win!

That's because of the good twist and hip pull at the end of the stroke?

Is this open to everyone, or is it by invite only?

Yes, kayak rotation and hip work are very important factors.
Trials are open to any athlete with proven record in any paddling discipline. Last trials were won by kayakers, both women and men, one of them a playboat kayaker, semi novice dragonboater, but top cross country skier.
Age does not seem to be of that great importance in this sport either, so I encourage all competent seniors to come.
While Jim's Senior Open team for Montreal is almost full, GWN ( and me as a coach) may enter another open senior team, composed of marathon paddlers and those who would do well on the trials. My prime responsibility are premier teams, and the second senior entry depends on the available number of qualified paddlers. And,I do need a few more quality seniors for Shanghai.

Maks ... how many open (available) spots do you have for the Premier Men's crew? Is it is case of 15 seats of the 24 roster have already been spoken for? Just interested to get a sense of chances and opportunities.
Cheers....
