GP Rankings

Here are the latest Grand Prix Rankings taking into account the results from Toronto Island and Ottawa festivals. Both have been assigned a competitive multiplier of 1.0 The results also include a revision to the Lachine competitive multiplier, which has been adjusted to 1.0, and the addition of some missing results from Lachine and Onake.

how does this ranking stuff work

June 28 2005, 11:53 AM

i know that my crew has only raced twice this year, but in both these races we have placed higher then the blades and the shogun warriors. with the shogun warriors we beat them head to head in both the pickering and the toronto island finals. the blades, in both races, finished in a whole division behind us. teams like smoke on the water and st. joseph are also some of the crews that we either beat head to head or placed higher then at the island festival. i realise that each race is alloted a certain point value...but doesn't head to head mean anything? ranked 39th? we finished 14th and 8th in the pickering and islands respectively (both alloted high points) - i think that that deserves more than a 39th rank in your GP Rankings.

Sorry mister wavecutter ... there are many teams that 'deserve' higher ranking ... its just the nature of the system ... nothings perfect

The problem with these rankings IMO is that despite the competitive multiplier it's too easy to score points at small festivals, and too hard to score points at big festivals.

What is considered "enough" as far as competition is concerned? To have a more accurate ranking system, can you reconsider the Welland festival? Give it at least a 0.25 multiplier as there were some talented out of town teams competing there that weekend.

If you are ranking ALL festival (whether big or small) you can include Cambridge which had about 9 teams :P ... points for everyone!

never perfect

June 28 2005, 1:07 PM

unfortnuately, ranking systems like this work best when many events come into play. Crews which race infrequently are likely to be rated lower than more active crews - nature of the beast!

One way to modify might be to rank based on , say, past 4 events. That way, very active crews cannot run up points.

Not sure this is good as it is eliminating data.

welland

June 28 2005, 1:43 PM

welland had the gwn seniors, macs guys , hammerheads , fish and others in the race offs... seems plenty competitive

Welland

There were only like 8 teams

June 28 2005, 2:13 PM

So everyone gets points?

Maybe do the top 4/5 or something, but a team should never get points just for showing up.

There were two competitions held that weekend in Welland. Don't confuse them.

Need mulitpiers for both Welland races

June 28 2005, 5:02 PM

There were 8 teams in the Regatta
and about 30 teams in the festival.
taking place at the same time and same location.

Both should get some sort of multiplier:
Regatta: 0.25 (because there were only 8 teams)
festival: 0.25 (included a handful fast out-of-town competitive teams)

there were 5/6 top teams in welland.. anyone racing against a senior team this year will know... the competition was stronger than some of the other 0.5 rated regattas.

OK 'wavecutter' (11:53), for what it's really worth - you're better than all of those teams you mentioned. You can sleep peacefully now.

Why don't you revise your ranking system and start charting teams according to best time on record? We all experience different water but at least times could be averaged out to reflect their best time rather than placement.
just a thought

New ranking scheme

June 30 2005, 2:31 PM

I will be publishing a new Dragon Boat ranking list in the near future which will undoubtably become the standard ranking method used worldwide.

The rankings will be based on such factors as the mean square chi sigma average tachyon field, as well as other important stuff like how much money your team sends me.

A paypal account and donation information will be forthcoing, and I'm looking forward to "hearing" from the most competitive teams.

Sincerely,
Fran King
