An indication that HK races aren't what they used to be: No Canada, no US, no Australia, not even the Phillipenes (I say 'not even' because they won this thing a couple of years in a row, not to denigrate them). In fact, where exactly is the 'international' in this field.
Too bad. It was a lot of fun while it lasted. |

You know those tickets teams win at the Island?
They're supposed to be tickets to Hong Kong's festival... |

the asia tickets have always been used well:
its the vancouver ones which went away used in an unexplained db manner:
corporate tix:
01 - ID taiwan
02 - ID thailand
03 - huron china
04 - flexogan china (worlds)
05 - SRS ??? |

97 - Husky Injection Barracudas - no one goes anywhere.
98 - Starchoice wins, GTDBC Goes to Hong Kong
99 - BMO Hong Kong
00 - BMO Hong Kong
01 - ID taiwan
02 - ID thailand
03 - huron china
04 - flexogan china (worlds in 2004)
05 - SRS ???
The Flexogan/National team was king of fishy. When you win in 2004, you're supposed to use the tickets in 2005, but they were permitted to use the tickets in the same year. And Flexogan, which won the tickets, does not necessarily equal the National Team, which used them. I guess they figured it was close enough, the National team needed funding, etc.
The 1998 GTDBC thing was also kind of funny. TCBA wanted nothing to do with Starchoice, just like they wanted nothing to do with Husky the year before. There may have been court action over this, but the end result was that Starchoice folded and TCBA instead sponsored the GTDBC All-Stars to paddle in Hong Kong in '99 |

I think BMO won the Island in '96 (not the BMO employee team but the BMO "ringer" team) and they went on to win in Hong Kong in '97. Something like that.
Jbird, you out there? |

And where exactly is the 'international' in the field of the Toronto International Dragon Boat Race Festival? |

White Ninja -- to answer your question: no where.
So, what's that got to do with this particular thread? |

The international ctiteria was met with the entry of the (New York) Wall Street Dragons team. This is better than the "World Series" when the world is not even invited to compete. |

Funny, I was going to bring up that old chestnut about it being called the "World Series" because it was originally sponsored by some newspaper called the New York World . But it turns out that's not true after all, and it really did mean World Champions.

Before late 90's the prize used to go to the winner of the men's Division in Toronto. That used to be the big race. Now it is the Mixed division the reigns. Back then there were 20 tickets up for grabs. Now the winning crew receives 10 tickets to be used the following year in Asia, although even that is not a guarantee as TCBA does have a clause that allows them to essentially dictate who travels. The sponsor ( Tour East) actually donates more than 10 tickets but the TBCA takes several for their own personal use ( contra). Hey it's a free trip for them and it appears Tour East doesn't care. |
