Early Sunday, compatriots of the Shantastic approached the MOFO camp and issued the push up challenge on behalf of him. The MOFOs were enthusiastic, and also suggested other demonstrations of physical prowess, among which included a general brawl, or "kumite". While the idea was intriguing, it would have left many participants unable to attend work or school on Monday, and was shelved to instead only include the push up competition.
The announcer booth was approached shortly before the 'A' consolation race started and a request was made to issue out an invitation to all other teams to participate after the award ceremonies.
However, this was not to be. Not only was there no general announcement over the PA system, but also there was no announcement at the closing of the awards ceremony! What went wrong? Was the request unusual? Perhaps. Inappropriate? Definitely not!
However, to their credit, as the disappointed Shockwave crew turned to leave, the MOFOs issued out a loud challenge! The Shantastic turned around slowly, and the air was suddenly charged with a palpable sense of tension and fear. It was said that in ancient times, villagers had human sacrifices to appease the anger of the Shantastic.
A large crowd gathered around the common area close to the stage, and oddly enough, the soundtrack to You Got Served could be heard playing in the background. There were hushed whispers of "It's on!" dispersed among the crowd. There was so much excitement that one of the observers developed a bleeding nose, although the question of whether it was due to the excitement or "yeet hey" was left unanswered.
After some initial confusion, the Shantastic was chosen to go first. He whipped out a blinding 121 push ups before stopping, and then signaled to Andrew "Chounami" Chou of the MOFOs that it was his turn.
The Chounami started off strong, but began to have longer and longer pauses at the top, until observers wondered if he was actually napping after each push up. Despite the pauses, the Chounami managed to crank out an astounding 126 before collapsing. There were remarks of disbelief, and the Shantastic was quoted as having said, "I didn't want it to look that ugly (referring to the Chounami's last 25 or so pushups). If I knew he was going to do that then I would have gone longer." This personage did a quick extrapolation based on both the performances of the Shantastic and the Chounami, and if the Shantastic had in fact paused after each push up, he would have been able to do a conservative estimate of 9000, +/- 250. The results were debatable, but it is true that there were no time limits on pauses.
People looked around for more competitors, and William from Hanalei stepped up! I must admit that this observer was dubious, until William managed to do some strange push up hybrid with his arms fully extended! Shantastic could be heard muttering, "Shouldn't be possible...the Law of Conservation of Momentum..." The entire crowd was wowed by this incredible display of prowess.
Unfortunately, nobody else stepped up to demonstrate his/her knowledge of pushupology, even though there were plenty of onlookers. However, there was an unnamed male who was able to balance an open can of beer on his head, and then sit down and stand back up without spilling a drop. While it looked impressive and would most certainly come in handy during the Superbowl when one has to goto the can, it was questionable as to sheer physical prowess.
There were more cries for challengers, but people were becoming hungry, and instead used to their energy to attack the food at Movenpick Marche.
In this observer's eyes, the 1st Annual Shantastic Push Up Open was a smashing success, and it is hoped that next year at TIDBRF and GWN there will be an even larger turnout. Shantastic has already begun to alter his training regime and research to accomodate William's unorthodox push up style. Shockwave, MOFOs, Riptide, Hanalei, and all other teams are encouraged to begin training post-haste for next year, whether it be normal push ups, one arm, extended arms, or no arms. Until then, this observer will sit back on his couch and spend some well-earned time watching television.

This was the first time I'd ever seen anyone do the "William" pushup, and it simply AMAZED me to see him do it with such thorough, concentrated efficiency. I was in further AWE when I heard he was 60ish! He easily outperformed me at the task and has definitely earned my respect.
Cheers!

This is true. However, the thing they both have in common is that they both give out gifts of Crest Whitestrips after the competition.
Oh, I heard that Shantastic's six-pack is slightly more defined than that of Santastic. Not as much facial hair though.

"Not A Mofo": If you would have even bothered to get to know the Mofos you would be surprised to discover a few things about them that I did. The intelligence quotent on the team is higher than any of the teams out there, with an abundance of engineers and other demanding professions. sandy himself I believe holds degree's in engineering and physics.

Good work guys. I think whoever went last between Chounami and Shantastic was going to be able to squeeze out a couple more bad form reps and win. Next year we should make it a full team versus team event and just add up the total team pushups. I suggest we re-hire the Hanalei Circus Act for the half time entertainment!
On an equally important note, I heard an ultra competitive team hand stand competition may be in the works for 2006.
See you next year!
