Even if there is only a remote chance that it could be severe, it would be foolish to risk going down there. I hope the organizers have the good sense to cancel/postpone the event. |

I know of a group of people going down some of which are already in Tampa currently. Looks like this thing is scheduled to hit the Miami area on Saturday so by the end of this week or sooner I hope for everyone's sake they cancel this even and people fly or drive back. It's not worth the risk. |

| Numbered TWELVE | October 19 2005, 10:04 AM |
SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras - Gathering strength at a fierce pace, Hurricane Wilma swirled into the most intense Atlantic storm ever recorded Wednesday, a Category 5 monster packing 175 mph wind that forecasts warned was "extremely dangerous." Wilma was dumping rain on Central America and Mexico, and forecasters warned of a "significant threat" to Florida by the weekend.
Not good news. |

Make sure they don't charge you a fee for the change, the carrier (JetBlue) we were gonna use is waiving the fees due to the hurricane. We found out not all the airline customer service is aware of this. |

I'm changing my flights for January, forget about attending the race at a later date. There will probably be a hurricane every week till December. |

Poster above is correct. Have the airline check about waiving the penalty fees. Mine did as well. (Air Canada). I have a credit for about a year to reuse.
Our team is extremely lucky. Refund on the hotel as well. We are in the clear.
I suppose they are understanding about this sort of thing...it is a freakin' hurricane after all. People can die!!!
This brings back Philly deja vu.....unbelievable!! |

Our team booked with Westjet. They aren't willing to waive the fees as of yet, but they said that that may change as the Wilma's path becomes clear.
Is anyone considering rescheduling the trip to coincide with the new race date when it's released? We were really looking forward to participating in this race. |

word that I received is they will decide in two weeks from now, when they get back to their offices. So it could be any weekend from Mid November till December. Once I heard that I called and switch my flights for a nice vacation in January.
I'll be in Miami in January chillin'. |

"Dear MR. HUGO CORDERO:
Due to the sudden change in weather forecast, the Miami Hong Kong Dragon Boat festival will be postponed to a future date due to Hurricane Wilma's change in direction and the new path will have the hurricane heading directly to Miami for Saturday and Sunday, October 22-23, 2005.
We are in meetings right now with the City Officials to determine a future date. The Miami Police and Fire Department have strongly recommended that we not hold the event because of the eminent danger and their inability to completely safeguard the event in case of Hurricane Wilma arrival.
Sorry for the inconvenience caused by this sudden turn of events. This is truly an unusual year for natural disasters not only in the USA but all over the world as well.

It took a lot of complaining but Westjet finally changed their mind today about charging a cancellation fee of $50 for each ticket.
Due to the possibility of Hurricane Wilma affecting WestJet operations, WestJet is allowing all guests traveling to or from Fort Myers, Tampa or Fort Lauderdale between October 20 and October 24, 2005 to change their flight to one of the following dates:
October 21, 2005
October 22, 2005
October 25, 2005
October 26, 2005
October 27, 2005
October 28, 2005
Alternatively, guests travelling to or from any of these destinations on these dates may cancel their flight and receive a WestJet Future Travel Credit.
Guests making these changes will not be charged a fee or the difference in fare.
To make changes to your travel plans, please contact WestJet at 1.800.538.5696.
Thank you for your time.

Glad we made the right decision to cancel. It would have been miserable. |

The organizers made a responsible decision to postpone the event..They are are considering a weekend in March for the festival. |

Well, March seems so far off...I was thinking more like the end of November or December......oh well, it would be just prior to the season. A good warm up, I suppose. Just before Tampa in April, for the locals. |

| Florida event cancelled due to hurricane - October 2005 | August 15 2008, 12:09 AM |
Sorry to re-post such an old post, but this is what happened to a Florida event in October of 2005. They had to cancel an event due to Hurricane Wilma. I'm really unsure if I want my team flying down from Canada to Disney. Even if we get vacation insurance, the trouble of having my team take the time off, etc. |
