So, I make it is a hobby of mine to hang around paddling pools and university gyms, and basically anywhere dragonboat teams are training and I have to say RAGE against the dragonboat is looking really good. Who are these guys, its like they came right out of nowhere. I like to follow a lot of teams, my team is ok but we wish we were as good as the mofos. I wish you forum people would get off their backs. They are a good bunch. Once at GWN when they stood the dragonboat world on their heads with a great B division final race, I ran down to the dock area where SIX OF THEM gave me a high five when I held out my hand. Oh I wish i had a pen because I know they would have given me an autograph for sure.
Anyways back to my point. I think it will be a tight race for the university cup. I know some of the Phoenix ETS crew have been dealing with some training camp injuries. Plus a few of their engine room muscle was off representing Chile at the World Cup of Dragonboat and ended up watching more races then they paddled in so they may not be in prime form for Pickering. Although the steriod scandal that hangs over a few New Dragon paddlers could be a bit distracting for this top notch crew.
I will be back throughout the season to give my unbiased input regarding who is training hard and looking good to surprise some teams at upcoming events. I will always post as annonymous so to not confuse anyone, or give any hint toward who I might be.

Re: University Cup
March 27 2006, 10:33 AM
No, I have never raced Phoenix-ETS but I can certainly tell you what strategy I had when racing New College.
Except I won't.
But here's a clue: it wasn't the same as racing in "open" or premier mixed. Racing New College, I knew that we were going to win. When time is irrelevant, you don't race for time.
I want to preface the below by saying I've been to a fundraiser with the New College team in attendance, and they were all really cool people. It's nice to get to know people off the water.
But to say the New Dragons are going to take over as #1 shows complete disregard for the fact that UC trained twice as much and spent probably infinitely as much time analyzing group and individual videos and frame-by-frame picture analysis. It was so easy to coach last year (and to the person who said I inherited a good team, you're damn right), but the truth of the matter is the team worked its ass off last year and worked for every bit of success (and failure) that was earned.
You cannot discount the experience of making the B final in Pickering, and learning how to paddle through months of frustration after a less than ideal Island, the cancellation of Waterloo only to get to NACCC to post a 2:11 in the qualifying rounds which at least, time-wise was ahead of a great team like Tempest. Granted, the team imploded afterwards, but most university teams bitch and whine at the slightest bit of adversity. But swallowing pride and focusing on themselves from June through August was an invaluable heading to China racing not only in an entirely different type of boat, but they also trained hard for that 5k. Training for the 5k - the 40 minute pieces for volume, the 2000m repeats for speed. There was some pain and agony let me tell you but they came through with flying colours.
How can you discount that experience? They trained twice as much as you, competed at high levels you can't even begin to imagine and you think they're going to drop beneath you? I don't care how much more the New Dragons can bench, pullup, erg, or run. I'm sorry but no new stroke (which you have yet to test on the water) will make up for those hours on the water that at least 14-15 of those kids put in last year. You have not done the work on the water to rationalize your ascent to the top. And you will not out-coach Rob Chang.
You may be fitter, you may have more talent, but simply haven't paid your dues to beat Phoenix-ETS this year. I can almost guarantee that the wash at the Olympic Basin kept the times close. I may not have raced dragonboat in Montreal, but I did race Junior C-15 at CCA's last year and I do know about the power of wash. Just ask Rideau.

By staying humble and working on yourself. It's that simple. Good teams quietly do thier thing and then win when no one is expecting them to. The truly good teams then don't rub people's faces in it.

Heck, lets discount women, because compared to olympic men, they have pathetic results too. Re: University Cup

Well, i'm sure they can pull a lot more. But do you know why they are doing it that low? Do you understand the physiology behind it? Do you know what their goal is?
2nd thing, if you watch carefully, they are not just rowing with one arm. There is another component to it.
So, next time you see something like that, instead of ridiculing it, ask why.

Re: University Cup
April 6 2006, 6:41 PM
About your point of the 2.5 pound plate being negligible. Ever heard of the "ceiling theory"? An athletes performance plateaus out no matter what level they are at. As you reach this plateau, large increases (quarters) will overshoot your plateau making you unable to perform the rep. However, by adding small increments (pennies), the athlete is able to continue their progress, getting closer to their plateau. 2.5 is not negligible, especially when you are at a high level

my point about 2.5 pounds being negligible applied for squats or other compound lifts. that little variation in load can be easily overcome by mental focus and proper warmup such that the muscles are ready to resist heavy loads and they are not already exhausted by excessive warm up sets
plus an increment of 2.5 pounds given an average bodyweight of 150 pounds...is less than 2%, surely when attempting to make gains one would aim for a higher gain than that, at least 5-10%

Yeah.. Because they can't do more. 30 reps is by no means a lot.
With that weight, rowing with anything more than the arm is a waste of time. Why bother doing pull downs when the weight of your arms already pulls the bar down halfway?

A nice light weight to do 40 reps for strengthening the shoulder and lats would be 70-80lbs at least. 40lbs would be good for someone who's just getting their muscles and bones started with the motion - ie new to lifting anything in repetition.

The U of T Piranhas were Rob Chang's team. Multiple colleges or teams did not collaborate. It was friends that got together who then networked by word of mouth for the most part.
Today's top university teams get thousands of dollars of funding from their colleges. We got virutally nothing from Scarborough College. I recall we paid our way for everything.

Jason, your team may have started out as Rob's friends, but once you'd proven yourselves, you quickly started attracting some of the best paddlers from UC and Vic College. You even called yourselves the U of T Piranhas for a couple of years, as I recall.
Funding varies from team to team. The Iron Dragons seem to have gotten quite the cash windfall this year, judging by the matching life jackets and carbon fibre paddles! Didn't seem to make them any faster, though

I was also impressed by their class. They were very cordial at the award ceremonies - and were basically the same as when they didn't win. Some teams should learn from that. (Hint hint)
The only jackass** was that Alan guy, what's up with him?

Pickering uni-cup results 2006:
ETS: 2:09.07
Water Dragons: 2:10.54
New Dragonz: 2:10.86
These teams race again in Montreal. Should be fun to watch

Yes. Both teams will be at Montreal.
Organizing a university all-men/all-women's team amongst the three teams would be pretty interesting...we can see how they stack up relative to the community teams.

"Yeah Rob just because you've told not to post here, you think they don't when they can hide under Anon?"
No I don't think they do. I have always told my teams to stay off the forum ever since I saw it begin to get ugly a few years back. We have a culture of respect and family that gives me this trust.
If you want empirical proof that its not UC consider this. For the three years that I have coached UC (over the last 4), there has never been trash talking regarding the University division. Something has changed in the landscape and I am sure it isn't UC.
If for no other reason people who trash talk should remember this: "Some days you're the dog and some days you are the fire hydrant"

University Cup Awards Ceremony
June 27 2006, 9:51 AM
Just to clarify regarding that. We did not know the awards ceremony was immediately after the race. Those on UC who did make it to the ceremony happened to be there because they were checking to see who won. I found out the result when I was walking to the scoreboard and heard the awards announcer announce the winner. I immediately told my camp to go to the ceremony but it was too late as everyone was walking back. For this I apologize.
I understand this forum is a great place for people to cause trouble. However, those who know me know that I have very strong feelings towards sportsmanship. New College's performance this year has been impressive and I am glad the University division is one in which a crew can be proud of winning it.
However, I believe that I have been in dragon boat long enough for people to know what I am about. This is a sport of friendly but intense competition. The sooner people realize this the sooner they will realize that trash talking and libel are ridiculous endeavours that only serve to boost immature egos.

It's about sportsmanship young new colleger. You squawk like a bird when you win but you fall deafeningly silent when you lose. Your most recent "victory" was based on best overall time in a festival known for unfair boats and uneven lanes. Perhaps you should take a page from your competitors and celebrate amongst yourselves when you win.

Real University Cup
July 27 2006, 10:05 AM
This was a good competition, it's could be interesting to have a kind of championship. For the moment on 2 events where the 3 big team was there it was:
Pickering:
1- ETS-Phoenix 2:09.07
2- Water Dragon 2:10.54
3- New Dragon 2:10.86
Montreal:
1- New Dragon 2:10.12
2- Water Dragon 2:11.22
3- ETS Phoenix 2:12.02
Waterloo not sure, but ETS wasn't be there.
Toronto not sure, but again ETS wasn't be there.
With some position points we can have a better view of the season. If we include Toronto for next year with ETS in it, we can have 3 or 4 events. It could be interesting... What do you tink about it... Someone have already try to do something in this way??
University Cup can became true, not just a forum title... And with a real results.

Re: University Cup

For speciality cups the Montreal event awarded them based on time and that doesn't mean anything with two sets and boats and lane biases (to a lesser extent).

I just want to say how impressed I am with the Phoenix crew. I truly believe that a true sportsman/sportswoman needs not only to know how to win, but also to lose. And you do both gracefully. You have my utmost respect.
I'm sure there were reasons why Phoenix was not able to do as well as usual - but you don't see them making excuses for themselves.

July 27 2006, 11:33 AM
Ok do you want me to sign my name?
Then I will.
I am impressed with Phoenix-ETS. I love the UC Waterdragons, I'm probably their #1 fan - but I really respect what Phoenix brings to the table. I don't say it a lot on the forum, but I do say this in person when I speak with others about University racing.
I'll bet you any money most of the shit-disturbing comes from Ontario.
Champions know how to be gracious in victory and defeat. Even though Phoenix lost the most recent head-to-head battle - I'll say this year's team would have beaten both Ontario teams 4 times out of 5. As for last year we'll never know. As for future years, there's only one way to find out who will be better.

It would be nice to have more chances to actually race university teams head-to-head. Perhaps if more university teams went to Montreal (which I know may be difficult because of funding restrictions), maybe the organizers could be pressured into making a more "official" school division.
At the same time, it is nice to also be able to race in the open division . . . I think Centre Island does a good job of balancing both of these, while Waterloo and Montreal don't.
On a side note, I wonder if dragon boat will ever become a recognized university sport . . . hahah.
