Biggest upset of the day was a keg malfunction that made for a very dry awards ceremony. |

Was it a short course?
1:58 seems fast for a 500m. |

Did Jetstart get significantly better than last year or was the course just that fast? Or was there lack of competition? |

Since Jetstart is doing a tour of China right now starting with a race at Stanley Park in Hong Kong this weekend (they left the day after Milton), I would guess the crew has been training pretty hard to do decently on their trip. As usual, when a cheap trip is involved, a team's good paddlers usually show up and I notice their top guys all out. |

Forgot to add.
While Jetstart was probably better than usual here, Milton lacked the upper talent it has seen in the past. The PDBC Collectives (Elite and X) broke their two year consecutive string of attendance this year and the Piranhas haven't been back since 2004.

Good for Jetstart, a good crew. Shame about the uniforms |

The course was about 450, and the RDY boats are fairly light which can attribute for the very fast times. There was also a nice little tailwind down the course.
Overall it was a great day. Jetstart won it from start to finish, with Team Chaos right behind them and a strong showing by UC Waterdragons, Old Skul'd, Team CIBC and BMO.
The bonus 2000 metre race was a nice addition, but it took forever to get the last two races started. |

No disrespect to Jetstart or Chaos but they're not sub two minute teams. The course was short. Jetstart finished a couple seats ahead of Chaos with open water on third place. They're good teams, but not elite teams. Times like 1:58 and 1:59 in a 500m are elite times.
Overall it was a decent starter event (with exception of the keg malfunction which was a disaster). Everybody knows you don't do a Lively event for the slick production. You take it for what it is, an early-season opportunity to get a lot of racing cheap (three 500*, one 250 and a 2000) and you live with the quirks.

I don't understand the hangup over a time. Courses are different, conditions are different and boats are different. RDY boats may be the lightest around (for example: the drum is plastic and not wood) and I believe the bottom is not as flat as other boats.
The important statistic is relative time differences. Crews that we believe are faster would have likely finished faster and in the end, isn't that all that matters? Who gets over the line first. Whether it is in 1:30 or 3:30 is irrelevant.
All in all, Jetstart looked pretty good and Chaos was strong too. Good Luck to Jetstart in China. Do us proud. |

| Sub 2 minutes | May 30 2006, 2:43 PM |
Look for more sub 2 minute times in a couple of weeks at Stouffville also.
Deep water + Fast boats = faster times. |

What a dumb argument.
I love Stouffville. great event. but what point does this have in the Milton thread? |

| kinda silly | May 30 2006, 3:44 PM |
but maybe the person who put the stoufville comment in here was just trying to say that sub 2:00min times can be had at different regattas aside from milton. whatever.
i checked out prior results and times at stoufville for last year seemed a little fast compared to the year before. either the course was short, or there was a good tailwind, or both. sub 2:00min on a full 500m course without a tailwind is very hard to do no matter what boat you are in or how deep the water is.
not impossible, just very, very hard. |

| Sub two minute times at Milton | May 30 2006, 4:18 PM |
Take a good crew subtract 50 metres from the course, add a nice tailwind, deep water and a light boat and presto - you have a sub two minute racing time.
Scary to think of what some of the Club Crew teams would have done under the same circumstances.
All those conditions aside, an impressive performance by Jetstart, and Chaos. Whats the saying you have to be good to be lucky?

in prevoius years, times were even faster..piranhas and xpads did anywhere from 1:51-1:56 when they were there. |

Add approx 13.2-15 seconds for the last 50m if they were short.
that will give you a comparison |

Interesting fact is that 3 of these teams are ranked back to back to back on the true rankings:
40 Team Chaos 2:12.3 2:10.5 +15 2:10.5 +8 hh
41 Jetstart 2:12.4 2:11.3 +12 2:11.3 +2 hh
42 UofT UC Water Dragons 2:12.6 2:13.2 -7 2:11.0 +6 ii

Don't get hung up on the times. It was only about a 430 to 450m coarse. As good as all those teams did. They are not faster then the Scotia /Rouge and G&G's of the world. Those teams are close to but not breaking 2min on a true 500m coarse. It was a good day but take it for what it's worth. A fun regatta with very few competitive teams. |

In Welland in 2003, 10 of the top 12 mixed crews broke 2min on a full 500m course.
- Fast boats (buk)
- Deep water
- HUGE tailwind
MCC actually came in at 1:51, but even Wong's and Bytown did it in 1:54 |

Are you comparing Chao's and Jet Start with those teams????
Trust me it wasn't a 500m race coarse. |

I'm not comparing any team to any other team, just saying that under the right conditions a number of crews can break 2min for 500m, and they don't have to be G&G or Scotia-Rouge, either. |

Way to try and stir something up. I don't think anyone said that. I think if you read through the thread you will see a MANY positings that attirubte the fast times to a short course, very light boats and a healthy tail wind.

| Re: Milton? | June 3 2006, 1:05 PM |
Mostly it was the short course. There was a light tail wind for the final. RDY boats may be lighter, but I find they don't plane as well as some other designs. | |
