How did all of the boats racing in the B finals manage to knock 7 seconds off of their time?

I heard that at least 2 of the three teams were saving 'it' for the final for a special surprise. Too bad all of them were saving 'it'. B times were surprisingly fast for that calibre of a team, just 4 seconds off of A division.

by the way I am on one of the B Final teams, and trust me there was no saving anything, we would have loved to make it to A Finals. That would have been a special surprise right there.

It's one thing saving it when the times don't matter, like Pickering's semis, but here, when the A final is three teams and it's all based on time? Don't think so.
Good racing everyone, organizers did a good job of catching up after the late start.
A final was a blast, Hanalei rocks, always a pleasure to race against them, awesome crew.

"I heard that at least 2 of the three teams were saving 'it' for the final for a special surprise. Too bad all of them were saving 'it'. B times were surprisingly fast for that calibre of a team, just 4 seconds off of A division."

Why is that too bad? None of those teams were fast enough to be the top 3? If they put up the times they did in the first 500m heat they still wouldn't have made it to the A final. Scotia, Hanelei and Bif Fish all put up 2:09's to get to the A final.

Saving it didn't cost them a thing, as all these teams got to the B final, and put up a great race.

Tailgaters just edging out Hydrophobic Dragons, and Shockwave was right in there too. Could have been anyone's race coming into the last 100M. Congrats to all teams.

Another great race at Stouffville

June 11 2006, 4:52 PM

This is our second year as participants at the festival and once again, Jeff, Paul and team did an awesome job! Friendly people all round - dragonboaters and staff- with a festival, that even battling blowing winds, managed to finish ahead of schedule. AND medals - yes, someone still gives them out plus hats!

Great job, thanks for the fun, solid competition and to everyone that bought tickets for our Golf and Quilt draws, we'll be posting the winners on Tuesday - unfortunately, some members left their ticket stubs at home.... 'senior moment'!

To all those who paddled, how were the conditions?
I did not participate but was walking around outside and boy was it windy and a little chilly.
How was it paddling?
Even if conditions were less than ideal the times sure were outstanding... congrats to all.

Re: Stouffville-Musselmans Lake - Results?

June 12 2006, 10:40 AM

Overall it was a good day. When the Sun was out the temperature was okay, but it was a little chilly when the clouds were out (which was about half the time).

The event ran well. Fun music. Announcer who couldn't shut up. I swear the only moment of silence was the uncomfortable one after he made organ jokes to the woman from Team Transplant.

Conditions were decent. A gusting tail wind pretty much all day. A and B finals were both fantastic races and a great finish to the day.

A couple observations/suggestions for next year:

1. If it's going to be a three race event advertise it as such. If you have to change plans at the last minute try to be a little more forthright about it. People may not like the changes, but at least they'll understand why it had to be done. Saying nothing was is worst way to handle these things.

2. In a three race event teams should be seeded into heats after their first race. Most teams raced two time trials before they got to match up against similar teams for one race in the finals.

Second round racing would've been much more interesting if teams competing for ovarall position could've raced head-to-head. Is there a reason the second round heats needed to be set before race day?

3. It's a cheaper event, but not such a great value when you add on the $120-140 cost per team of the $6 park admission fee.

But I'm not trying to dwell on the negative. Overall it was a good day with some great final round racing.

Riptide

June 12 2006, 11:00 AM

Riptide looks like they've had a lot of changes for this year. So how about letting go of the Waterloo thing?

Is it fair to mock the results of this year's group for something that happened last year? Many who weren't involved in last year's team are now having their efforts ridiculed.

Give em a break.

So are you trying to say that the reason that Riptide sucks so much this year is because they replaced a fair amount of their glorious paddlers with crappy paddlers? I'm sure these new crappy paddlers would just love to hear this instead of the alternative mockery.

A sample of the announcer's work:
"Yep, another great race from Team Transplant. Great bunch of folks, very brave to be out on the water. Just remember to take your all your organs with you when you get off the boat. The next team doesn't want to be sitting on any hearts. And breaking them. I mean they don't want to break anyone's heart. That they left on the bench by accident. Because of the whole organ donating thing." (awkward silence)

Looked like Scotia and Hanalei were both short a few regular bodies. Regardless the A final was a great race. Well done all teams.

Have to say Hanalei is one of my favorite teams to watch. Such a beautiful technique. Even at high tempo, they seam so clean and controlled. Labelling themselves "the fastest team without uniforms" was pretty funny too. Something kinda cool about 20 people in random paddling gear beating a field full of fancy custom uniforms.

520?

June 12 2006, 12:53 PM

Really? Course was 520? Did you GPS it? Or are basing that on your own "feel"?

If there was some extra length the running downwind starts may have mitigated some of its impact on times.

I don't know whats the obsession with Riptide. We all know they're not one of the top level teams here and they got lucky in Waterloo. Yeah I saw that ridiculous message last year too, but its new year give it a rest. This horse has been beaten dead long time ago, only bones left now!

Nothing like a good case of Riptide necrophilia. Obviously the community likes to revive old, bad, tasteless jokes. This forum just wouldn't be the same without. In fact, I'm kind of missing the Mofo jokes. It would be nice if there was a new team to pick on. Any nominations?

Hanalei could've won GWN last September. And a week later in Stratford they crushed the A final by open water. So I don't their performance is a surprise. Between oc and dragon boat they get many more hours on the water than most dragon boat teams. Makes a difference.

Whenever Hanalai is Hanalai and a good dose of Trout they are way faster... Troutalai anyone?

While the other finalist were missing folks, Hanalai may also have been, but they replaced them with Trout as usual which seems to be a big plus.

Since this seems the norm, then for all agruments sake this is their team, so that is how good they are. Your all just going to have to deal with it and get faster.

I agree with that. But for the record, they looked more Hanalei'ish than Trout'ish to me on Saturday. Hell, they looked pretty BMO'ish too, if you want split hairs.

Good team. Always a pleasure to race them (but I'll enjoy it more once I beat them!)

I'm gunning for you Hanalei, you scary-fast motley crew of misfit freaks!

Re: Stouffville-Musselmans Lake - Results?

They were missing about 4 people for the first race. They have no BMO paddlers. Those BMO empolyees you see are not on the BMO team. If you want to know why there fast. They had a great coach last year and a great coach this year. They work hard and earn everything they've done this season. Stop acting like you got beat by some other team you were beat by Hanalei. Oh and they are better come the second half of the season.

Hanalei led from wire to wire in Stouffville. Whose wash could they ride?

As for the drinking beer and practicing only their finish, bullsh!t on that too. You don't get as fast as they are by chance.

Of all crews out there aside from G&G or the national team, Hanalei has the most small-boat owners of any team I know. They have a lot of good fit paddlers. And Cecil. But the good fit paddlers more than make up for that.

They raced well, leave it at that.

Hanalei - Wash Ride? Funny :-)

June 13 2006, 5:51 PM

I think the wash riding comment for Hanalei is funny. Did they wash ride to second and beating Mayfair in the semi at GWN last year? Did they wash ride at Stratford in open water when they set the ten year course record? This crew has proven it is the experienced and committed people in the boat that make the difference year after year. Let's just say last year too many out of shape people early in the season did not help the crew's early season performance. Riding last years end of season performance and fitness just kept the off-season value of fitness on the team's minds over the winter leading into this year.

Exactly where does Hanalei belong in the bigger picture,

Can they beat, Collingwood, Sudbury Chiro's, (probably)

Can they beat Verdun, Wongs, Hammerheads, Piranhas-Beach, Big Fish(not sure)

How about, Scotia-Rouge, Eat Trout, Canadian Senior Dragonboat Club (A), everyone with their full crew (don't think so) maybe Senior (B)

And then, Mayfair, G&G - not on their best day!

Mofo's - every day and every practise cause Mofo's Stink!!!!!!!!!
