Indeed Telus has a chance to win , but depending of what other teams shows up from Ontario ...ETS who also did well in Ottawa should be in the finals.....Verdun Adrenaline /Wongs cannot predict will see... |

They proved it in Lachine and Ottawa. Stayed in the top three on Saturday and moved to close fourth on Sunday. If G&G, Seniors, SRS, Beasts or one of the Three Rivers teams shows, then all bets are off. Lane bias is bad at the basin too, I don't care what anyone says. It is a factor. |

Actually if you ask someone on G&G they will tell you otherwise. They do not want to be playing around with their strategy on the day club crews start. They are also humble enough to realize that they are not a shoe-in. they bust their butts out there. |

MIDBRF post traumatic stress disorder victim
| Montreal is hardly the place to tune up | July 5 2006, 10:59 AM |
The Olympic Basin is shallow and weed-clogged. If you land in the middle lanes (3, 4 and 5) you wind up dragging everyone else. Lanes 1 & 2 are best and often whoever is in these lanes wins the race. And good point, waiting 16 hours for four races held in an area that has no shade or shelter. That and you race in possily three different fleets of substandard SRS boats. Remember the time protests over this last year? You don't come to MTL for the competition, you come to party. |

My goodness, what a silly term for flatwater sprint paddlers. If it were used in a kind, big brotherly sort of way it would be one thing, but this derogatory tone is not nice. When I was young, flatties was the term used for girls who were "flat-chested." Inappropriate, surely, since the complaints are generally about male flatwater sprint paddlers.
Using the term is a dead give-away that all you know about paddling comes from the dragon boat forum. I,for one, never go on the forum. |

Can make or break a race at MTL. Almost as bad as GWN. Middle lanes 3 and 4 drag everyone's arses while the outside lanes 5 and 6 are so shallow you can touch the bottom with your paddle. 1 and 2 almost always win the race unless their crews are inexperienced. |

I'll tell if you tell first wee dinky.
The negative attitude in the Dragon Boat community (if you even want to call it that) is pathetic. Bashing team mates, other team, good teams, new teams, equipment, lanes, weather, you name it.The list is fucking endless.
I do not have to be affiliated with SRS to be aware of the constant bashing it gets on this forum, nor many other facets of this sport.

The festival was great. I loved it. And I don't have to tell you who I am.
There was hype around the SRS crew. They didn't perform to the hype and I was making light of the fact there seemed to be a pit crew feeling sometimes before races.

Race Results were up since last night 5:50pm (20mins after last race). Saturday night it was up on their Festival's Forum by 5:50pm. How do I know? I got home after the last 500m Mens Final A & checked!
Cudos to the organizers for:
* the gigantic fire hose just by the staging area. That was AMAZING.
* plenty of shade in the staging area.
* Replacing all the tents after Thursday night winds.
* the lightning quick boat repair pit crews. F1 Grand Prix should be your next client, or Holmes on Homes TV show.
* the volunteers <sniffs>. You guys braved the cold wet weather on Sat. & still kept the boats all bailed for us! You deserve my medallion, instead of a tshirt & pizza for 12 hours of volunteering each day.
* First Aid Station. Ice packs always at the ready, and tons of professional staff!
* CTV on Sunday, that pumped up the excitement.
* CHEAP Watermelon Slussies. Those who bought & asked would've found out all proceeds went to a volunteer going to Nicaragua to building an elementary school. Best of luck Amelia/Amanda I forget the name!
* LST. Hehehe. You guys reminded me of why I joined dragon boat. Keep the spirit running, and DON'T read this forum. It'll kill your love of the sport, almost did to me.
* Free water after each race on Saturday. What happened on Sunday? Ran out?
* Huge mouth dropping medals.
* Fast awards presentations.
* Fast results postings.
* Fast & professional race officials.
* <drum rolls...> Raced ON SCHEDULE!
Lemons to the organizers for:
* the announcers. You can do better.
* the boats. For this size of event & relatively new boats, you shouldn't have to fix them so many times. Find a buyer & replace them all with another brand.
* awful lane 6. But that's life. Make lemonade out of it somehow.
* no Japanese drumming group. Oh well, life goes on.
Overall, the BEST festival I've been to. Very debateable, but that's what this forum is all about. Go trash this event...boats...organizers, everyone, you all seem very good at it. I'm coming back next year with no hesitations, and next year the day after, will be my next visit to this sport-killing forum.

Yup definitely good festival. While I could've done without the rain, was kinda nice not having to bake for 2 full days. Excellent job work from the volunteers.
The usual bad, boats having to be fixed, lane bias, but it happens pretty much everywhere so what can you do. As for annoncers I kinda missed the announcer from last year, pretty much no enthuasim from this years annoucers.
Still was a good event overall and will be back again! |

Back from Montreal
| Re: Montreal Predictions | July 24 2006, 12:53 PM |
Still were two sets of boats. One set slower than the other.
Lane bias still there. Being in Lane 1 or 2 usually meant top 3 if not an automatic win. Being in lane 5 or 6 with instant death.
Montreal has to take a page from TIDBRF and GWN and start placing teams in a slow and fast lane for their qualifiers. Some crews had inside lanes for both of their first two heats while others were stuck on the outside all day.
They should also re-seed the semi-finals and finals heats. Top seeds in the middle meant the 5th seed qualified to a higher finals way too often at the expense of the 2nd and 4th seeds:
Lane 1 - Seed 5
Lane 2 - Seed 3
Lane 3 - Seed 1
Lane 4 - Seed 2
Lane 5 - Seed 4
Lane 6 - Seed 6

They did show some major improvements. I think getting their ass whooped by the 3R team at last year's Quebec Cup gave them something to seek revenge on. The Matts and John, want to turn them into a Men version of the MTL DBC Women Elite. They are still far off from the top Toronto Men crew, but give them a few years.....
(oooooh I can just anticipate all those Torontonians coming in to do the usual bashing this forum has used us to ! lol)) |

| Re: Montreal Predictions | July 26 2006, 11:14 AM |
There is no need to bash. Your comment is based on a lack of understanding of just what the MTL Men are up against. They can train all they want, but would never even make the National Mens team break a sweat in holding the sanction.
Who is going to beat the best group of paddlers that can be brought together from all paddling disciplins regardless of how hard they train? Like it or not, its like saying your rec hockey team is going to train extra hard and then try and beat the Canadian national hockey team.
Good luck with that. |

| Re: Montreal Predictions | July 26 2006, 11:55 AM |
I'm sure they said the same thing about flatwater women in dragon boats 5-10 years ago. look at the women's crews now.
Simple fact, if ever a team devotes 20+ hours a week to dragon boat, doing whatever training techniques they're doing in 10 years, they'll be fast. At a given point in time in the future, spending time working your glide/balance/hip work in C-1, will be time wasted if compared to someone whose program is geared entirely to DB. - this program may include some small boat work, but only the right amount. Ultimately, in the future, athletes focused entirely on DB will win DB.

| Re: Montreal Predictions | July 26 2006, 12:10 PM |
look at what's happening people.
The flatwater throw together teams are not what they used to be (actually they are exactely what they used to be, it's the DB'ers that are getting much faster).
I wish the Montreal men the best of luck at the next NTT's (2008).
The Montreal women do it with no flratwater experience in the boat. |

| Re: Montreal Predictions | July 26 2006, 12:42 PM |
If the flatwater community put a team together of young girls who train hard(17 -28) and are so fit, I believe they would crush the other womens teams. The younger girls do not have the time or desire to do dragon boat. One day they may decide to give it a whirl and them look out. |

| Re: Montreal Predictions | July 26 2006, 12:53 PM |
The flatwater community has an endless number of elite paddlers to continue to feed the system. The well known secret to success is to do small boat training to improve individual paddling. Its really that simple. |

Montreal Men Paddler
| Show us some love! | July 26 2006, 3:17 PM |
We're just a bunch of dedicated DB'ers who made the Montreal Men's team roster and love the Sport.
We're working extremely hard to be the best that we can and do Canada proud at the CCWC's in August. There is very little flatwater experience in our boat and if that is to our detriment than so be it.
Our women are fantastic paddlers and a great inspiration to us. They work so hard and it does pay off. We can only strive to be as good as they are.
Whether we will ever be as good as the amazing Toronto Men, who knows? All I can tell you is that we are having a great time and damn it felt good to win that final on Saturday!

"If the flatwater community put a team together of young girls who train hard(17 -28) and are so fit, I believe they would crush the other womens teams"
thank you for validating my point. These girls are spending too much time training Kayak to train DB. If they were to focus on DB, then they certainly would be good, possibly enough to win.... but to the detriment of their kayaking.
The original point is: in the future, paddlers who devote themselves %100 to dragon boat, will eventually form the best DB teams. This may or may not include a flatwater component. |

I am more than aware of what kind of competition awaits us at the CCWC's having been to them before. Judging by the way you talk smack like that, there is no way you are on a team that is going to be there.
We never said we were going to the CCWC's to win the championship. We're going there to give it everything we have and then some and hopefully do well (and you know it's going to be a blast!). If we get beat by some crazy strong Russian (Shtoorm) or Aussie (Snatch) teams then so be it. Just the fact that we are going to be there among all these high-caliber international teams while you sit at home and talk trash on this forum makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.
I'll be thinking about you as I paddle down the course - maybe it'll help me go that much faster!
